Developing a plan that captures the best aspects of what NSF and NIH were while addressing some long-standing issues is what the effort at the @standupforscience.net policy shop is developing.
This is what I worry about when dems (fingers crossed) regain power, they're going to need extensive persuading to restore NSF NIH etc. to how they were, instead of trying to reinvent the process "while the patient's already on the table." We need to hand them an institutional time capsule.
the hardest thing for the politician-bureaucrats to understand -- but which NSF staff *absolutely do* understand and always have -- is that you actually make scientific progress by giving young people money and promising not to bother them
