The bow of a shipwreck with a broken wooden hull and rusting metal stacks: Laying on a sandy beach. There are dark skies and heavy rain is coming in at an angle. It's working up to a squall, a test of the power of Gore-Tex versus nature. The stunning remains of this wreck sit on a pebbled beach with a backdrop of rainforests. We're looking past the remnants of the bow, through driving rain into the Hecate Strait, the notoriously rough waters that drove the 264-foot log barge aground during a winter storm in 1928. On this day we were to take a day long zodiac ride to SGang Gwaay UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Historic Site: Cancelled due to rough seas. It makes me wonder why I thought this trail was a good idea. I guess I wanted to test my raingear. We came back on the following day to hike in the sunshine, which felt like it was a completely different place. The Pesuta Shipwreck Trail is one of the most popular hiking trails on Haida Gwaii.

Two Brown, or Arctic Skua standing on top of a rock, greeting the few visitors this Island receives. We are below the Antarctic circle, few ships come this far south. Skua are notoriously nasty, often stealing food from larger birds and animals. There are also accounts from scientists who’ve been attacked by them.

A range of jagged limestone spires fills the middle of the frame. The tallest peak sits right of center, its summit wrapped in a thin cloud. To its left a slimmer tower rises on its own, and the ridge steps back to the far left in paler, bluer layers. A band of white-lavender fog lies in the valley below the spires. The sky grades from pale blue at the top through lavender to pink at the horizon. Warm orange light touches the upper faces of the spires and a large pale buttress at lower right, while their shadow sides stay cool violet-gray. The foreground is dark rust-brown tundra scattered with gray stones. The image is built on warm and cool contrast inside a narrow violet-to-pink palette.
