this isn’t a matter of bleeding heart morality vs. cold but effective politics. the political case for moving away from trans rights is, on its own terms, extremely weak.

i see a lot of debate around this issue that takes it for granted that supporting trans rights (especially in the sports context) will hurt you electorally. it’s worth highlighting that that’s just not what the data shows.

these people, for the most part, believe what they say. they’re putting billions of dollars on the line for it. failisson the younger legitimately believed (and probably still believes) that bari weiss is going to make him into rupert murdoch, and failure father moneybags is willing to bankroll

a lot of people think that faillison hired bari weiss to deliberately destroy CBS news and i think all of you need to consider the possibility that he hired her because he genuinely thought she would be successful.
a wild thing is that they didn’t just give her editorial control, they gave her what sounds like operational control (over hiring/firing), which would be objectively an insane thing to do even if she was good at editorial, which she isn’t, or had experience at an org this size, which she doesn’t
Once again for the people in the back. Bari does not have any talent. She can throw a good party and chat you up but good, and people mistake that for ability. It was fine enough to open her empty vessel of a newsletter. It can't run a real organization.

Ellison also invested in Theranos and thought Elizabeth Holmes was magnificent. He’s not playing 4d chess he’s losing a game of Go Fish to a 7 year old who’s lying about their cards.

i described lewis hamilton this way to point out how mainstream and major the sheerhan/macklemore/kraft situation has become, but now people are mad because they think i was trying to diminish hamilton's many achievements and that it's disrespectful to define him as someone's boyfriend. lol. lmao.

This almost always consists of conservatives saying "people no longer trust your institution" after spending decades doing everything they can to destroy trust in the institution. True of the press, true of academia, true of public health.
When I was trying to conceptualize "the trust trap" my examples were RFK and HHS, Bezos at the Post, and Bari Weiss at CBS.

The naive premise behind all this—which I think some of them sincerely believe!—is that if public trust in an institution has declined, it MUST be because that institution has done something wrong to lose that trust, and the status quo ante will be naturally restored if the mistake is corrected.

I've been thinking about this a lot because of all the talk about how Dolly Parton "didn't take sides" and I think she's proof that if you don't want to talk about politics you don't have to, but she took sides with her money & her actions and her side was pretty clear.

So is Sheeran's, I guess.
I fucking hate "I don't take sides" people, which is just siding with the oppressor and hoping you'll have plausible deniability. You're not apolitical, you're not neutral, you're just doing this:
According to too many,
there is white and then there is political
there is male and then there is political
there is capitalism and then there is political
there is straight and then there is political
there is cis and then there is political
there is non-disabled and then there is political

What SCOTUS did today is refuse to lift a preliminary injunction issued by Judge Talwani against the Trump order/USPS rule, that's all. A long process lies ahead for the litigation against the rule, that will most likely end back in front of SCOTUS ahead 2028.
They're almost certainly planning to try again for the 2028 presidential election, and they'll argue that they've corrected all of the constitutional defects that SCOTUS identified for the midterms.
