I don’t feel the need to explain my art to you, Warren.
Every time Anxiety Shark shows up in my inbox I am simultaneously delighted I get to read it and also preemptively professionally jealous because Niko’s writing is just that good. I *loved* this piece.

My dad insisted on saying the name of Werthers Originals like “vehr-tares”, because, as he would explain, it’s a German word. (We are Anglo Canadians) 30 years later my siblings and I still sneer “vehr-tares” at each other when one of us is pretentious or precious with pronunciation.
hit me with your hyperspecific friend or family slang. when i was a kid my friend once ate too many sour patch kids and then had some ketchup on fries and it was painful because of how acid blasted his tongue was. he told this story a few times, so "a ketchup story" came to mean an oft-repeated tale

Me: Absolutely. They are the burdens of my life

It's amazing people will claim "Canada and the USA have the same culture" and then on something as fundamental as "do you trust your fellow citizens to be good" we are further apart than any other two countries
Very disturbing implications for a couple of places where I’ve lived, and encouraging ones for the place where I’m from.

From Pew: “We asked people around the world to rate the morality and ethics of others in their country.”

Found an additional graphic that gets even more of these quotes together.

I've kept "I hate myself, I hate clover, and I hate bees" pinned above my desk since I first started studying evolutionary biology as an undergraduate. So relatable to get extremely frustrated with your study system.

Audience culture is the worst it's ever been, I swear to god. People forgot how to act. I'm at the theater, trying to enjoy my show, which I've paid GOOD MONEY for, and these two old assholes are in the balcony heckling the life out of the poor bear onstage. Not letting him finish a single joke.

“passive-aggressive weirdos living in isolated weird places” man, let’s put this on the flag. After 7-8 years in NW BC I know it to be true.
people always stereotype Canadians as being polite, and its not true at all. We are passive-agressive weirdos who live in isolated weird places and the sooner we make peace with that the better

COVID-19 should have brought us together. Instead, it accelerated our turn towards toxic hyper-individualism.

On Remembrance Day, let's rediscover the importance of values like shared sacrifice and mutual interest -- and remember why it mattered.
