In a matter of days Ukraine has retaken land on the frontline that it took Russia a year and tens of thousands of lives to occupy. Putin is on the back foot and desperate.

Ukrainian intelligence says he’s now removed restrictions on the air campaign so they can target schools and hospitals.

@drewmcweeny.com A comment you made a couple of month back nudged me to reread a couple of Ross MacDonald paperbacks.

It’s appalling he’s been so forgotten. “Sleeping Beauty” for eg. is as good a post war American novel as some Saul Bellow. No interest in showy vocab, just difficult truths.

Thx

I play this game called Treat where you can earn treats that get sent to participating dog shelters. I’ve been earning treats for a dog that had been in a shelter for 30 weeks, and I was losing hope she’d ever get adopted. I just saw tonight that she got a home and I’m really happy.

So The Odyssey. Superb. Probably conceived after the Ukraine invasion but themes - and imagery - go way deeper

Astonished by how easily and regularly Musk’s promotion of race riots on Twitter get shrugged off as ‘business as usual’ and not newsworthy .

Kids are on their phones too much. I don't know why they don't use the many youth clubs, public swimming pools, community clubs or sports facilities successive governments and skint local authorities have underfunded, closed or sold to property developers.

It’s weird that Helen of Troy being played by a black actress is a problem, but most of the rest of the Mediterranean, Greek and Turkish characters being played by incredibly fair and blond haired people of British, Irish and Scandinavian descent isn’t.

And by weird, I mean entirely predictable.

Everyone knows Hollywood is fucked, but most people don't actually know why. The studios used the strikes as cover to cancel a full 1/3rd of TV production across the board. 1/3 of TV cast & crew are out of work. Fully. There just aren't jobs for them. Many are people who made your favorite shows.

This is exactly why language matters: “women were given the vote” frames equality as a gift from men, instead of hard won political power extracted through organized resistance.

Nobody gave women anything.

Women fought, marched, strategized, endured violence, went to prison and died for it.
