When people realize that it is possible for them to just use one account to use all of their apps for notes, projects, docs, etc., and to own all of that data in one place, and to migrate all of it to another provider at any time, they won't want to sign up for another cloud service ever again

I honestly believe this use case will be much, much more important than the social use cases we've so far seen atproto is capable of. People tolerate using centralized social accounts, but they absolutely hate having to use cloud services for their productivity apps

if it helps, it's good to remind ourselves that bluesky and atproto as a concept have only existed for a mere 3 years, meanwhile the giants currently holding all the network effects had decades to build them up. As @quillmatiq.com said, it's a long game

I know we care about numbers, and it's not that they're not worth looking at, but maybe Bluesky not having explosive growth is good for the Atmosphere that's building beyond it, and patience is more important than the first attempt gathering every community possible in its early years.

Long game.

you got those from T&T? They look EXACTLY like the ones I can get from my local KFC in Hong Kong

@toni.bsky.team actually talked a little about monetization on the decoder podcast, in short it will be similar to an affiliate model

one silver lining I can see from this is that Threads demonstrate that interoperation between social apps absolutely works - it's precisely the fact that Meta integrates Threads into all of its apps and streamlining the login process for its users that Threads managed to get this big this quickly
August 12, 2026 at 10:37 PM
Threads is big here for the simple reason that Meta has a chokehold on the social media landscape here (as well as other places like Taiwan). All people use here are Facebook, Whatsapp, Instagram and now Threads.

I'm gonna buck the trend here and say most of the cultural impact is outside of the anglosphere where you can't see it. In Hong Kong for example I see threads posts referenced all the time on news outlets, and often shows up on google searches when I search for local topics.

bluesky recently switched to KLIPY because Tenor (now owned by Google) shut down their API. However since quite a while ago you have been able to upload your own gifs directly to bsky using the media button, no hosting services needed!
