🔇🔇🔇Announcing new work from DAIR which is very close to my heart, 3 years in the making.

When #TigrayGenocide, the deadliest genocide of the 21st century thus far, started in November 2020, it was 1 month before I got fired from Google. 🧵

Ethiopia’s forgotten war is the deadliest of the 21st century, with around 600,000 civilian deaths
Estimates by European institutions and academics say over half a million non-combatants have died during the Tigray conflict as a result of a government blockade that kept out humanitarian aid

I can count the number of cis people talking about this on one hand.

This is absolutely terrible news.

With the shifting regulatory climate (i.e., antivax ratfuckery), Moderna has withdrawn their application for their eagerly anticipated COVID-flu combo vaccine. This vaccine offered better protection than getting each shot separately.

We're within sight of $5,000 today! Let's see if we can get over that line. Thanks for donating and sharing!
I wrote about the @chicagoreader.com's music coverage and why it shouldn't go away. Can you throw a few bucks at the paper to keep it running?

Yeah, it's a long story, but it turns out our budget is smaller than we thought. This is bad. Thanks for whatever you can do!

my hometown is a rural agriculture backwater in north mexico and we regularly receive trade envoys from china for our exports. america has more or less allowed china to cultivate significant trade relations and other major bilateral exchanges throughout latin america. it's honestly super funny.
Latin American countries have more foreign policy flexibility today than in the 1950s. China is more economically powerful than USSR and has deep trade relations with the region. Regional countries are wealthier. Most have stable institutions, and militaries are unwilling to openly reenter politics.

1,179 people arrested total. 566 people arrested "were only detained because they lacked legal authorization to remain in the U.S." When ICE claims they are only arresting "criminals," they are trying to redefine "criminal." Which is kind of the point of the category: it can hold anyone disfavored.
ICE makes close to 1,200 arrests in one day
Nearly half of those detained don’t have criminal records, according to a senior Trump administration official.

I am begging the national media to start taking this seriously.

Stop buying the claims that the framing of "temporary" or "pause."

They are altering the review processes of federally funded scientific research from merit-based peer review processes to political screening by ideologues.
NEW — OMB temporarily pauses all agency grants and loans programs.

Per copy of memo: "The use of Federal resources to advance Marxist equity, transgenderism, and green new deal social engineering policies is a waste of taxpayer dollars that does not improve the day-to-day lives of those we serve."

Most of the money that researchers spend is on paying other researchers. In other words, canceling research funds is taking money out of local economies by removing people and their spending power from them. 🧪
In Astronomy, NSF has only 1 call per year (grants last 3 years). This means that if the process is paused (or worse), it has a huge ripple effect: it changes how we do graduate admissions, as ~1/2 of our graduate students are funded by NSF grants. It changes if we can hire postdoctoral researchers.

Hey, while we're talking about erasing history:

In 1949 the US military held its first Aeriel Gunnery Competition, later known as "Top Gun."

The best of the best competed in dogfighting and other skills. The team that won, was the 332nd: The Tuskegee airmen.

So they refused to announce a winner🤡
