I think LORD OF THE RINGS being a story in which, canonically, it is entirely possible for evil to triumph in the temporal world, and in fact more likely than not that it will, but also that reality should not change the meaning of your moral values, is an underrated part of what makes it so good.

You know, I think a lot of people don't quite get the full point of A Christmas Carol.
Christmas isn't the actual POINT of the story. It's the VEHICLE through which Dickens tries to reach people and ask them to be COMPASSIONATE and CHARITABLE.
