I think theres a couple of different parts to it. I think the key aspect is that there's an enormous libidinal investment in power, and what could be more powerful than "fathering" the god/ai they fantasize about. (1/n)
Like they don't sound like they *want* humanity to be eradicated but they also don't sound as if they have any confidence whatsoever that by being the ones to build the satan chatbot they will actually be able to improve its safety. They're just going around saying "guess I'll end the world? 🤷‍♂️"

The citation crisis ("you mean you guys read the sources you cite?"), like the replication crisis, exists because academia has been neoliberalised to death. The pressure to publish to keep an academic job is absurd and the metrics are unbelievably crude — that's why we're here.

Researchers should seriously consider the ethics and morality of which organisations and governments they accept funding from, even in contexts where it may mean less ambitious projects and outcomes.
I think we need an inverse thread where we talk about things that normal intelligent people universally agree upon that are for some reason hot takes within your profession
What's something that experts/practitioners in your field universally agree upon, but that remains a "hot take" among the general public?

It is actually a thing, in as much as there is 100% certainty that once we reach a certain scale, there are a number of very important things they can do that are impossible classically. The point at which we can do that is likely quite far off, but its a matter of when not if.
