I mean...
I cannot swear to know the minds of men like Murphy and Sanders. But, were I a betting person, I’d wager someone else’s riches that they know racism and xenophobia are inextricably linked to America’s inchoate understanding of class politics. They know that “working class” has become a powerful political totem of its own — a discursive sleight of hand used to separate out white voters’ concerns as more legitimate, more materially grounded, more important than other voters’ concerns. These senators are demonstrating a willful blindness that has become endemic in the Democratic Party. Their rhetoric — and the conventional wisdom that flows from it — suggests that we cannot talk about economic solutions without abandoning our commitment to the Black, Latino, gay, transgender and female poor that are the lifeblood of the Democratic Party’s base. The conceit at the heart of that belief is that poor white people are too racist, and too uniquely ignorant of their racism, to vote in their best interests. Therefore, Democrats have to accept a little racism to win the working class. It is an old argument. History will tell you that negotiating with racism or fascism or authoritarianism never ends well.

Also, it's long past time to retire vulgar Marxist arguments about how racism and nativism are just a tool that the capitalist class is using to divide the working class. This stuff is not a distraction. It is a central motivating and binding force in politics, both in the US and elsewhere.

I was delighted to learn, when researching for my new article in @thenation.com, that Black Philadelphians were talkin their shit as early as 1848 (decades before the Constitution explicitly guaranteed birthright citizenship, mind you)

and they were right to do so

In the decades immediately preceding and following the Civil War, for instance, tens of thousands of Black people attended hundreds of political gatherings in which they organized for racial justice, including by making broad claims about the scope of their constitutional rights. As early as 1844, for example, delegates at the State Convention of the Colored Citizens of Ohio pronounced it legally wrong that Black people were “shut out from the means of education, notwithstanding by the plain and indubitable language of the Constitution, every inhabitant of the State is entitled to those privileges.” In 1848, Black Philadelphians demanded entry through “the doors of the Constitution” as equal citizens by virtue of their being born in the United States. “If we are asked what evidence we bring to sustain our qualifications for citizenship, we will offer them certificates of our BIRTH and NATIVITY,” they avowed. At a National Convention in 1855, Black people declared that slavery unconstitutionally deprived them of liberty “without due process of law.” As a contemporary newspaper recounted, “The thing is settled, and the Constitution is Anti-Slavery, the ‘public sentiment’ of the Convention having so declared it!”

MONTANA SUPREME COURT: “Transgender discrimination is, by its very nature, sex discrimination,” and is subject to strict scrutiny under the Montana Constitution.
Transgender discrimination is, by its very nature, sex discrimination. Discrimination based on sex is expressly prohibited under Montana’s unique Nondiscrimination Clause––“[n]either the state nor any person, firm, corporation, or institution shall discriminate on account of . . . sex . . . .” Thus, Article II, Section 4 is unequivocal in its intolerance for discrimination based on sex. Because sex discrimination involves a fundamental right under Article II, the appropriate level of judicial review is strict scrutiny. Snetsinger, ¶ 17. ¶28 Being transgender is also a suspect class under the Equal Protection Clause of Article II, Section 4,––“[n]o person shall be denied equal protection of the law.”
