Good writing in my view - while some commentary on here has framed Sheeran's justification as a demonstration of the hollowness of "neutrality", as a professional moral philosopher it is also what we in the business refer to as a "lie" and it may be helpful to refer to it as such

i call this "neoteny of the oppressed" btw. because children are the archetypal objects of legitimate coercion (violence, authority, control, etc) any vulnerable group can have their autonomy stripped by first linking them to children & childlikeness. the comparison legitimizes any act of coercion
Transphobia and the oppression of children are linked to the point that trans adults are often treated like de facto children.
One way we see this is how we’re told continually that we don’t understand grown-up politics, as if our political concerns are childish and immature.

The images coming out of CUHK on that first day - which in retrospect was very chilled compared to what was to come - were unreal. This photo became iconic. A student, trying to shield himself from bullets and tear gas with... a dormitory mattress?

Something else that I thinks really needs emphasising: the police were the ones with the guns, who shot the (plastic and other) bullets, the tear gas. They were the ones with the water cannons, that shot the blue liquid that not only were meant to mark out protestors but also caused pain.

That 🧵 also mentions the police attacking people. And I really think this needs emphasizing: that so often, you see the 2019-20 Hong Kong protests described as "violent" -- sometimes with the classifying "sometimes", sometimes not, but almost never that much/the majority of it was by the police.

Seven years ago today, I got tear gassed while walking home after a protest march had ended. Of all the times I got tear gassed in 2019-20, this was actually the most direct hit I sustained and it was a pretty awful experience; one which caused me to be temporarily blinded, among other things.
Five years ago today, I messaged the following to a friend: "N and I got tear gassed near PP3".
It's been long ago enough that I now can abide to walk by/in that area but not long ago enough that I don't still feel uneasy doing so. And I still vividly remember the impact the tear gas had on me.
