Long story short, I picked up AOT over the weekend and noticed it has the same style as DS even though they are from different studios. Odd. This is a quick work to learn the art style.

Preparing character references for Tazawa Shigurē. Making sure that every detail including face, body proportions are consistent to help with progress. Then I don't have to look up references and instead just look at my own.

Small details tell different things about the subject. And I think this is the most important part - understanding what you want to convey. Aesthetics are nice, but you know that feeling when you see a beautifully rendered piece yet wonder "why didn't I like it"?

TIL I can go from grayscale to color just using multiply. For detailed, up close pieces I'll use this technique for a bit.
I played with lights a bit too. In fact I learned to paint and render the light sources (i.e. pendants) first to get the lighting correct from the beginning.

Gm! Made some corrections to the jawline because it didn't make sense from this perspective. Couldn't sleep much last night either because I was too worried about the nose bridge. I think some shadows helped make it less pronounced. I'm sure it'd be easier if I knew how make-up works haha. 😂
