BREAKING: Judge Dennis Saylor (GWBush/MA) temporarily blocks Trump admin drive to impose a 4-year limit on student visas now issued for length of study. Calls the rationale for the new rule "exceptionally weak." Doc: www.documentcloud.org/documents/28...

Happy little Saturday.

Chem Oce class was starting and a classmate told us a plane had hit the WTC. I assumed a Cessna. About 90 min later class ended and the world had changed. The internet was unusable so I didn't have much info on friends and brother in NYC. Mom used to work in the Pentagon adding to the emotions.

I just finished this last night and WOW...what a book. Having not read a Baldwin biography previously there was so much to learn.

Two thumbs up.

I am sure I have just released the cheat code for all my online data, but I don't care. These are always fun. And in this case, correct!

Dolly is not in our typical rotation at home. But today, the kids were bickering all morning. I usually let them alternate song choices on the way to school, typically a mix of Ethel Cain & Bad Religion depending on who chooses.

This morning I chose Dolly.

And everyone got to school happy.

I don't gamble on sports and I have never used DoorDash. I wonder if there is a place for me in society anymore.

I was only vaguely aware that Indy car racing was still a thing. Was into it as a little kid because my parents went to the 500. Then I started playing lax and MDW was filled with other things, like the D3 champs at UMd.

That's to say, I'm def not watching the Trump GP. Is Mario Andretti there?

This could complicate our annual trip to Wassaw. It was very smoky on Skidaway yesterday.

"The fire began Aug. 16 near the Fire Trail and Pavilion Trail areas of Wassaw National Wildlife Refuge. Initially estimated at about 100 acres, it has since grown to 340 acres"

What a time to be alive (and try to be a scientist).
For some perspective on how much FY26 is a historic outlier this is, here is a mockup using the number of grants with an original date for each fiscal year.

n.b. slightly overestimates the true number of new grants because it counts transfers, etc. as new awards

"...at nearly all youth levels, refs and umps are either volunteers or low-paid saints who are working games because they love the sport—and yelling mean things at these people makes you look like a jerk with almost no exceptions"

This dad gets it.
NEW STORY: A guide for parents to not screw up their kids' sporting experience. I offer this as a retired soccer dad, who spent a decade as a coach, ref and fan. I came away from that experience shocked at how many parents complicate their kids' athletic journey.

They are crushing US science and demoralizing good people in the process.

The inquiry into the nature of things will be a smoking crater by the time MAGA is done and those responsible pretend to never have supported it.

I've reached the age when I understand when professional athletes are ruled out for "tightness".

I get it. I couldn't do the dishes because tightness in my back had me crying for mercy.

From the road it looks like a film set for the zombie apocalypse.

I remember eating at the Hot Tamale with my mom back in the 90s. I can't recall if the food was good.

I have found so much good music through Brooklyn Vegan. This makes me sad.
BrooklynVegan, Alt Press, et al being unceremoniously shut down by a company owned by the guys from Good Charlotte that’s also owned by Live Nation is a plot that would happen in a direct to video sequel to Richie Rich.
