I was wondering why Trump refused to defend Saudi pipelines. Now it makes sense. Cause an oil shortage just in time for elections. Keep people away from the polls.
For people thinking, what's the big deal about the 4% cut in global oil production coming next week, that's the scale of the 1973 OPEC crisis and 1979 Iran war oil crisis. Each followed by a major recession.

If they can't get oil out via the Gulf (because Iran has blocked Hormuz) and they can't get oil out via the Red Sea, their economy—and by extension, domestic stability and international power—is in serious trouble.

Saudi Arabia could face the biggest threat to its existence ever. With oil exports shuttered and no money coming in, it will be forced to sell treasuries for liquidity which the US will oppose because it will cause yields to spike. Thus, they could be pushed into a balance of payments crisis.
