Trump is a monumental, historical, geopolitical failure.

Trump Wanted Canada as the 51st State. He Ended Up Pushing It Toward the European Union.

The invitation by the E.U. for Canada to become an “associate member” is a sign of Mr. Trump’s brand of diplomacy, which often involves threatening America’s closest friends.

What is the over/under on how long it takes before Trump invokes his new congressionally-granted authority to put ***100% tariffs*** on virtually any country he wants?

Senate Voting to Give Trump a Tariff Nuke
A bill supposedly aimed at Russia is really an unprecedented new tariff power grab—yet prominent Democrats are backing it.

Trump: "We're carrying the European nations. All we have to do is say, 'you know what? We're not trading with you anymore.' We don't need anything we have.' We have cars. We have lumber. We have food. We have everything."

Post-Trump US trade policy is going to be a big battle. Not sure where we will end up.
So I was chatting with a college mate whom I also went to grad school with (both universities Stateside), and talking about the EU “associate member” proposal.

His $0.02? “You know that once Trump is gone, almost all Americans will be fine going back to the older arrangements, right?”

8/ The obstacles are significant. Canada sends 70% of exports to the US and trades $850 billion with America versus $150 billion with Europe. Regulatory alignment with the EU means diverging from US standards embedded in USMCA.

2/ The conventional assumption has been that the fracturing of the US-led order would produce a choice between two blocs — one around Washington, one around Beijing. What's happening between Canada and the EU suggests a deliberate effort to build a third option.

In 1930 Congress gave the president Section 338 tariff authorities.

Trump has abused them.

In 1962 Congress gave the president Section 232 tariff authorities.

I have a theory that they want to find a way out of the trade war with Canada because it is hurting them in certain swing states, and threatening Europe here rather than Canada maybe supports that. But as with everything, who knows!

So hear me out. Trump wants to lower interest rates so dollars are relatively cheap, making US denominated assets (like exports) relatively cheap, thus boosting exports because people like to buy cheap things, and so this bleat is actually internally coherent if you squint.

It is...?funny?...that there is so much pearl-clutching in Canada about tapering any exports to the US, when the US President is, quite literally, begging us to stop exporting to them.
