What I, a relative normie, think "AI Safety" and "effective altruism" should mean: make sure ChatGPT isn't driving kids to suicide and that nonprofits use their money wisely and effectively

What it seems to actually mean: a bunch of Berkley doomers in a sex cult think the robot apocalypse is coming

"many of the six incidents involved older A.I. models that were never deployed" according to OpenAI. That just puts your mind at ease, doesn't it.

If someone knew little else besides scale & chaining, the ELIZA effect, and mundane robotics reward hacking, I think they'd have a more realistic understanding of what happened than people listening to the OpenAI spin or other AI hypebeasts.

Note: They are going to teach people how to use ChatGPT to spot scams. Yet another "AI literacy" / AI education campaign that just comes down to "figure out how to use our tools more"

We've already seen that the recent calls by AI industry leaders to ‘pace the frontier’ are insufficient, and their suggestions that we must weaken antitrust protections in order to confront the AI threat are transparently self-serving.

I wrote the other day about AI becoming a populist issue that transcended party lines, not realizing Bernie Sanders and Steve Bannon were about to share a stage on this topic!

Less shocking to me was reading this bit at the end, where Erickson - whose entire day-to-day job is just wanking out a bit of punditry once or twice a week - has handed much of that over to AI.

"AI folks have spent a long time talking to one another, and their explanations not just for what they’re attempting to build but why they have to build it are layered, heavily contingent thought experiments, rich in metaphor, full of prediction, and articulated in terms of game theory."
