so this is a bonanza for some specific parts of the Republican coalition, bad news for most other people (including Trump), and the kind of thing that starts to structurally change economies.
we've reached a new milestone- the U.S. average diesel price has hit $6.301/gal while gasoline is up to $4.355/gal. I expect both of these to jump noticably over the next 48 hours. diesel could hit $6.60/gal in a few days, surpassing the inflation-adjusted peak seen in 2022.

The impacts of the Iran war will intensify in the form of huge jumps in the prices of gasoline and diesel, analysts predict.

Attacks on Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline threaten to elevate what had been a shipping crisis into a broader disruption of oil.

By next week, some Americans will be paying over $10 a gallon, and because the pumps can’t handle it, they’ll probably have to sell by the liter. Iran may succeed at making the USA metric.

I’ll probably include a graph like this alongside the one I already show students about demand reduction at the height of COVID.

The (somewhat over-simplified) pt I try to get them to figure out is that these short term shocks are painful. It’s not how we want to do a transition.

Can we talk about $6 for a gallon of diesel fuel? Or nearly $5 for a gallon of gasoline?

It is hard to articulate how insanely stupid & destructive the war against Iran has been, but as one clear data point, there is no reason to assume the price of gas would have been anything other than flat had Trump not chosen to start his absurd war.
