Anne Applebaum: "The Trump administration has just announced a new “deal” with Greenland. It seems to be more or less the same deal that the U.S. has had with Greenland since 1951...Denmark...agreed to give the US the right to build military bases on Greenland, in the context of the NATO treaty."

Trump misstating and touting a meaningless deal over Greenland, while the entire Middle East security architecture falls apart due to his own actions, is emblematic of this administration’s foreign policy.

The government of Greenland and the Danish Prime Minister’s office have released a joint statement on an agreement with the United States.

Unsurprisingly, the statement does not match the sweeping nature of Trump’s post on Truth Social.

The Greenland “deal” epitomizes Trump. A huge amount of drama, a huge amount of damage that won’t be fixed for years and maybe never. And in the end he gets literally nothing but the diplo equivalent of Danish FIFA peace prize. 🏆 Stood down by Greenland and Denmark. Both hilarious and pathetic. Sad!

Seven months to get a Greenland deal we could have had in days. Greenland stays part of Denmark. No American flag. US security comes from alliances and treaties, not owned territory. On the BBC: newsletter.ivodaalder.com/p/seven-mont...

Beyond additional basing rights & a few other demands, the US was seeking a guarantee that Greenland won’t become independent. Obviously an unachievable goal that the Admin was never going to secure

Deal is a big win for Denmark & GL - all their key red lines have been respected

Greenland and Denmark, backed by European nations in NATO, together with the fabled “markets”, warded off Trump’s 🇬🇱 bid.
He gets basically what the US had since ‘51, with no infringement on 🇬🇱 and 🇩🇰 sovereignty.
🇪🇺 must learn that standing up to the bully is the way to go.
