one thing worth saying here specifically: there's lots that AI can't (yet) do and there's a lot of money riding on selling a particular narrative about its future capabilities. but the existential risk of AI is not only not mere hype but it is already a present tense problem

Presumably the main focus of the AI Force and the AI Czar will be fighting any efforts to regulate AI.
President Trump says he is forming an “AI Force,” modeled after the Space Force, and will soon appoint an AI “czar.” Trump said his administration will not “hinder or stifle” AI growth, saying the technology could eventually account for as much as 25% of U.S. GDP.

To be clear, some are talking about them. I absolutely know that and I amplify them!
But the breathless headlines about AI circling the world that everybody’s talking about? We don’t see the same visibility about risks of climate, nature, pollution, and fossil fuels. Yet they’re already happening.

There is a latent human anxiety about being kicked off the top of the food chain that seems to be stronger than the anxiety that we might destroy ourselves directly. So now we have abject terror about AI for the wrong reasons alongside complacency about the damage caused by humans.
