I’ve updated the long-running (starts 1866) CRU Southern Oscillation Index (SOI). This lets us compare the currently developing El Niño with earlier events including 1877-78.

2026 has developed very quickly, similar to the 1997-98 one.

Thick line is 3-month running mean, with y-axis reversed.

While the LNP fall over themselves to prove that they are worse than One Nation, this year's El Niño - which is both stacked on top of and worsened by global use of coal, oil and gas - is anticipated to kill almost half a million people from the heat alone.

Unfortunately, so can the first one (eg blaming tropical countries for deforestation or overfishing, rather than pointing out inequalities in consumption patterns and effects of international trade on land and sea use decisions).

But the first one obscures both cause and effect.

"As we enter what is likely the worst #ElNiño event in history, amid geopolitical turmoil...consideration of how we can adapt and survive is urgent."

Britain is in the grip of its worst-ever, record-shattering midsummer heatwave — even before the impacts of a predicted super El Niño of “Godzilla” strength are fully felt. In this stark context,…

This is actually happening throughout Europe (at least, probably also NA) because the bears are starving due to the climate crisis, but also their numbers have been recovering.
