1: the system slips its guardrails (hack a grocery store to get you the current banana price)
2: a person with bad intentions uses it as a tool to do harm more efficiently.

This is exactly right.
I’m not yet convinced Anthropic trained on Dr Mestre’s prompts. Same with OpenAI and Navier-Stokes. That’s the story that everyone wants to push. I think the bigger story is AI companies stomping all over scientific norms and practices like clumsy toddlers.

I will never understand why smart people all around me respond to AI with enthusiasm: it's as if they're attending a dinner party based on theft of their neighbors' groceries, plates & cutlery, saying "how convenient that these dishes just appeared, what a time-saver to steal from the neighbors!"

You would not believe all the smart, seemingly normal people I know who treat the crimes & ethical violations of AI like a petty distraction...or who have pre-emptively surrendered to their own exploitation, saying "It's inevitable, we just have to accept it."

Indeed, the common element in the successful cases has been that the AI user was able to provide substantial intellectual investment, but we will never get a real answer of where is the line. I think this is the correct approach.
