Fragment of an anthropomorphic brazier fired clay and pigment c. 1300 CE Aztec culture Mexico Aztec terracotta brazier from the Templo Mayor of Tenochtitlan. Associated with Xiuhtecuhtli, the god of fire, used in ritual offerings. Aztec braziers were primarily used for religious rituals, ceremonies, and as incense burners to honor deities, particularly Xiuhtecuhtli (the fire god) and Tlaloc (rain god). These ceramic, volcanic stone, or terracotta vessels held burning coals and copal resin, releasing fragrant smoke believed to carry prayers and offerings to the gods.

Tlaloc, (Nahuatl: "He Who Makes Things Sprout") Aztec rain god.

#art #sculpture #pottery #vase #tlaloc #aztec #mexica #cdmx #mexico #mesoamerica #precolumbian #ancientart #ancientpottery #prehispanic
Polychrome Aztec pottery vase depicting Tlaloc, god of rain. Ceramic pot modeled with a high relief figurehead of the face of Tlaloc, the god of rain. The Mexica conceived it as consisting of two snakes that intertwined at the nose and brought their heads together facing each other where the mouth is located. In this case, these snakes can be seen through the bands with vertical lines and alternating circles that are found over the eyebrows, eyes, nose and around the mouth. It was located in Offering 21 of the Main Temple and housed inside several mother-of-pearl shells and green stone beads, the latter as symbols of water. It belongs to Stage IV (1440- 1469). (Thanks to Nostalghia Mistica) Tlaloc, (Nahuatl: "He Who Makes Things Sprout") Aztec rain god. Representations of a rain god wearing a peculiar mask, with large round eyes and long fangs, date at least to the Teotihuacán culture of the highlands (3rd to 8th century AD).

Xōchipilli is the god of beauty, youth, love, passion, sex, sexuality, fertility, arts, song, music, dance, painting, writing, games, playfulness, nature, vegetation and flowers in Aztec mythology. His name contains the Nahuatl words xōchitl ('flower') and pilli (either 'prince' or 'child') and hence means 'flower prince', or maybe 'flower child'. A famous stone statue of Xōchipilli, the Aztec god of art, music, dance, and flowers. Created during the Aztec period (14th to 16th century) and discovered in Tlalmanalco, Mexico. Housed in the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City. The god sits on a stone base carved with symbols of sacred plants, including hallucinogenic mushrooms and flowers.
