Xōchipilli is the god of beauty, youth, love, passion, sex, sexuality, fertility, arts, song, music, dance, painting, writing, games, playfulness, nature, vegetation and flowers in Aztec mythology. His name contains the Nahuatl words xōchitl ('flower') and pilli (either 'prince' or 'child') and hence means 'flower prince', or maybe 'flower child'. A famous stone statue of Xōchipilli, the Aztec god of art, music, dance, and flowers. Created during the Aztec period (14th to 16th century) and discovered in Tlalmanalco, Mexico. Housed in the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City. The god sits on a stone base carved with symbols of sacred plants, including hallucinogenic mushrooms and flowers.

Xochipilli, the “Flower Prince,” was the god of flowers and patron of music, song, dance, and gambling. Under his other name, Macuilxochitl, he was also the patron deity of the ballgame, in which betting was a common practice. The god figure is seated with his legs drawn towards him and his arms resting across his knees. He wears a loincloth and sandals, and his head is adorned with the feather crest of the tropical quetzal bird, whose song is the first to be heard at dawn.

I chose deer for Xochipilli and Xochiquetzal. Deer has a very deep symbolism in Nahua mythology. Deer is associated with the sun, heat, and fertility, all of which are tied to Xochipilli. That is why Xochipilli is depicted as a deer on page 53 of Codex Borgia, with the day signs arrayed on him.

Xōchipilli (The Flower Prince) is the god of art, games, dance, flowers, and song in Aztec mythology. He’s the patron god of lovers, homosexuals, young men, and lord of flowers.

Xōchipilli has also been interpreted as the patron of both psychedelie and nature.
