To accompany all those Bluesky science/academia
#starterpacks, let's share introductions to the literature of our different fields.

Below, I humbly submit 12 main types of scientific papers on food, agriculture, land, & natural climate solutions (inspired by the amazing @xkcd.com). #FoodStudies 🧪

Global crop mapping got a major update earlier this year, when IFPRI and Land & Carbon Lab produced a map for the year 2020 showing crop areas and yields for 46 different crops globally. Read more and explore the maps here: 🧪 #FoodStudies
New Data Shows Where, and How Much, Crops are Produced

Explaining to my students today why it's gotten harder to pass a Farm Bill. In addition to moving to the right, the ideological dispersion of the GOP is much wider than it was fifty years ago, fraying the farm subsidies-food stamps coalition (among other things).

Here’s a good one: “Regenerative Agriculture: An agronomic perspective” by Giller et al. (2021). Open access link: 🧪 #FoodStudies #AgSky journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....
Anyone got any good reading recommendations on the history of regenerative agriculture/organic agriculture?

I'm curious why the idea of organic rose to the top early, and why regenerative ag received the spotlight recently despite its roots also running deep into the 20th century

A lot of hard truths in here. All food and climate peeps should read this.

We are in a climate crisis. No time to waste. So it’s time to be honest about what purported climate solutions can and can’t do, and keep eyes wide open for tradeoffs, which occur *very often* in agriculture. 🧪 #FoodStudies
Regenerative grazing is overhyped as a climate solution, and used to greenwash the livestock sector. As a climate solution, if pales to curbing waste and shifting diets.

But it does have other benefits for soil erosion and watersheds. So we should do some of it anyway.

In this paper, we trace a new untroubled assertion that agricultural intensification equates with sustainability. We break down how the argument is constructed and the implications for the future of food.

Our food system is broken. We produce enough to feed everyone, yet 3.7 BILLION people can't afford a healthy diet. Meanwhile, how we produce this food is pushing the planet to its limits. A new mega-study The Lancet reveals the shocking scale.

The world produces enough food, yet billions lack access to healthy & sustainable diets. A new EAT–Lancet report presents a science-based approach to improve health, safeguard our environment & provide for a projected 9.6 billion people by 2050.
