The #UKgov have mistakenly decided that performative cruelty and isolationism is what voters want:

Diehard Reform voters definitely want that rhetoric - but they will never vote for Labour anyway.

The truly sad outcome is that loyal and longtime Labour supporters are sickened by it all.

Timely post by @georgemonbiot.bsky.social addressing the tensions being created by Trump in Europe. For me there are different motivations for wanting to cause division in Europe. My own view is it’s primarily to pave the way for far right political domination.

The #UKgov must be courageous!
1. Trump and his Death Eaters cannot tolerate any rival power. Europe, when united, is a major trading and diplomatic bloc. They see Russia (much less of a threat to US hegemony) as an excellent instrument for breaking up Europe, by threat or by force.🧵

once again, #ukgov has done a terrible job explaining the facts here; we really need a gov info unit whose job is to counter misinformation actively, not just sit and watch it...
Anticipate the majority of UK media to falsely blame higher bills on "net zero", when they're directly being caused by fossil fuels.
I feel guilt rather than smugness looking at where energy bills are heading this winter.

I won't be using gas and thanks to my battery & solar 8p/kWh is the max I'll pay for elec into a heat pump delivering 3-400% heat efficiency.

I could afford the kit, most can't.

I hope #ukgov doesnt go down this path to eliminate #DEI as Trump is doing.

The Equality Act 2010 is an essential piece of legislation and prevents discrimination.

DEI gets a bad name because some focus on quotas instead of creating a level playing field - as I wrote about here bit.ly/3Q4OBP2

1/3 This feels like another knee-jerk reaction to the recent success of Reform. If #UKgov thinks this will bridge the gap, they're on the wrong track. Many people need to know that a) the gov is looking after ordinary people and b) housing, goods, and services are affordable. More ...

Come on #UKgov change the narrative - it’s up to you to change the story in many aspects. Otherwise you’re going to hand the UK to Reform.
Trump’s repression of free speech & disappearing of foreign students from campuses push academics to look for options elsewhere.

Europe’s reaction? Come here!

UK meanwhile? Hiking fees & cutting foreign student rights to make UK less attractive cos all that matters is lower immigration numbers 🙄

#ukgov says that they are compensating cutting benefits of disabled people by finding them jobs.

On the back of that they’re halving the UC Health payment for all disabled people, changing eligibility for PIP.

So what about those who suffer these cuts and can’t work? They will just be poorer!
March 26, 2025 at 11:07 PM
However the #UKgov try to wrap it up - the punitive cuts for disabled people are brutal. They are penalising the most vulnerable people.

Reducing UC health allowance by £50/week and reducing access to PIP assessments won't work. If policymakers understood how brains actually tick, they'd rethink:

Here @georgemonbiot.bsky.social absolutely nails the fundamental reason why the far right garners cult-like support.

Wealth inequality.

Unless #UKgov gets the courage to make people feel included, safe, cared for and able to manage financially they will hand the UK to Reform.

Great read ⬇️

The absolute reason the #UKgov is failing is its stubborn refusal to transform the UK economy. It might manifest in other reasons for dissatisfaction but all roads lead back to the neoliberal disastrous theory it’s following. It will be worse with #freeports.

Here @wpguy.uk Jason Boyd nails it. ⬇️

A brilliant and timely post from @georgemonbiot.bsky.social which says everything I wanted to say in my earlier post about #UKgov but didn’t! 😝

Seriously though a great thread which point by point demonstrates the frustrations of many labour supporters.
1. Here are just a few of the ways in which Starmer’s Labour Party seems determined to alienate its voters and lose the next election. As they pile up, you have to keep pinching yourself and asking, “what the hell is it playing at?” 🧵

the fact that #ukgov isn't tackling this is a massive failure - and an insult to the people who risk their lives saving others. shame on #burnham.

Here @richardjmurphy.bsky.social suggests consequences for billions who rely on the dollar for economic wellbeing. From what I have read about #MMT I imagine these are countries who don’t have monetary sovereignty.

The world and #ukgov need to understand the possible devastating global impact
Countries in the global south must run trade surpluses to earn dollars to repay their dollar debts. Now they are being punished with US tariffs further having done so. The result is that they will go bankrupt, with massive consequences for billions of people. www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2025/04...
How many countries will Trump bankrupt with his tariffs?
I have yet to see any comment in the media about one vital dimension to the new tariffs that Trump is imposing on many countries in the global south, including India, Bangladesh, Vietnam, South Africa...

The figs in this report are depressing. Im all for looking at why there are a high level of claimants but am stumped as why #UKgov are preemptively cutting benefits - it’s devastating for individuals.

Life is hard! But even harder for people who are disabled! This is just increasing suffering.

🧵 1/5 The #UKgov don’t seem to care they’re causing panic and alarm for people already struggling and whose lives are simply challenging in ways we often can’t imagine.

The gov cause a narrative where many people conclude disabled or unwell people choose to stay at home rather than work.

A good summary of the dilemma facing the #UKgov given recent developments from the USA. Strategically we are between a rock and a hard place. Personally I think we will do the world a disservice if we align to Trump, though many UK citizens do align with Trump/Farage. Thanks @jolk.bsky.social

This video from @richardjmurphy.bsky.social really sets out the stark reality that targeting disabled people is a political choice and there are other very reasonable choices available to the #ukgov - a must watch.
The government says it must balance its books and benefits cost too much, so they must be cut. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The #UKgov appears to have tied themselves up in knots re their stance on Brexit - Their fiscal rules - decision on taxation, ignoring #MMT to name a few.

What a breath of fresh air it would be to have a government who genuinely wanted the best for everyone and had the bottle to get on with it.
