She could feel predatory minds lurking at the edge of her senses, but Vessyriss had been right, they didn’t move any closer. They wanted to. She could feel it. But they couldn’t pass through the currents to get to her. Except for one. It glided towards her with a calm surety. No rush, no hesitation. Spooked, Fox turned to go back through the gate. But something stopped her. Don’t leave. Stiffening, she turned back. The creature wasn’t human; in this place it couldn’t hide that. She could feel its mind, so alien, touching hers. But it also wasn’t aggressive. No, it seemed…curious? Almost relieved. What was this? Nothing should be able to cross the Stream like that. Even demons couldn’t, they had to attach themselves to another body before crossing or be swept away, like everything else. Everything but the dragons. And this certainly wasn’t one of them. But it was similar somehow, in a way she couldn’t articulate. I have been looking for you. It spoke directly to her mind. Waiting. I was beginning to think you would never come.

She knew they would whisper about the institute, and she wanted to hear what they had to say. … a horde of demons, can you believe it? … did you see the dragon? It blotted out the sun! … my brother saw something in the savanna and hurried back all spooked! In the savanna? The impressionable brother might as easily have seen an animal, perhaps one of the giant yawä, but Kitana stored that information in any case. … they killed everyone, didn’t even spare my cousin’s little sprout. … what sort of rituals did they practise? She found it intriguing how most people believed the attack to have been the work of more than one demon. And it made sense: for Daegon to have torched the entire institution, it must’ve been infested. An easy rationale to accept. But Kitana was not yet convinced.

OH I'LL GIVE YOU SYNONYMS) This is [scary]. Actually, Frogbo couldn't think of a greater [terror] than this—but in lieu of less than another choice would this just have to do. On tremble-legs stood Frogbo acrest boxen tower-top, the wavy upwind of road just one jump ahead. An empty space tweenst box and road rest. The gap was small, yes, but any size meant a big thing when up so tall. Would even *we* feel strangely stood pon such great heights. Frogbo was falling all this time… since then, tailing tow with Bunibo. No longer, though: go-so they alone Frog-forth into unknown—where the smallest trip meant the biggest fall! A [frightening] thing to accept. Turning 'round and down, Frogbo peeked pon Bunibo below: still kept she waving, dress windswept. Frogbo waved back with their feets in hands' stead, then kipping both back up and over their head—creating a heart-shape with their legs. She's far away, but very clear—Bunibo shaped a heart-sign back with floppy ears. *Brave be.* Turning forward, Frogbo took their first step.

The camp was silent as a tomb. “Excellent. Now, let’s have a chat about how this is going to play out.” Nik tented her fingers and leaned back. “First off, all the hostages are going back home, safe and sound. That’s not negotiable. And I will not be paying a ransom. But I do have an offer for you.” A ripple of anger went through the crowd. A bandit with scraps of a uniform she didn’t recognize jumped to his feet. “This is ridiculous. She can’t fight us all. Let’s just end this.” The sound of a half-dozen swords clearing scabbards was followed by another crackle of electricity, and the sound of a half-dozen bodies hitting the ground around her. She didn’t even bother to glance in their direction. Two arrows aimed at her back were shoved away, striking the logs on either side. Nik turned and dropped both archers with a flick of her hand. A smile tugged at the corner of her lips. She was glad her soldiers weren’t here to see this. It might discourage them from their mage-neutralization training. “Anyone else want to play?”

[Redacted]'s men surrounded them in the boat, and [Redacted] himself piloted it through the dark. Bodies floated in a maze of drifting barriers and sunken obstacles. Rushak felt Drisal huddling close, enfolding him as much as possible as if to protect him from the damp and the danger. He was at once irked and grateful. But as he peered up, his companions doing the same, the chaos looming ahead choked him with fear. Fireballs sailed through the darkness, exploding into Vendear. The city resembled a volcano, high and tapered and vaguely threatening, its dark walls and round towers expelling a fiery glow. EERIE cries pierced the night. Chivelians shouted over the ramparts. Upriver, hot spots glowered in the charred remains of a small harbor village like disembodied, hovering eyes. Brother's Keeper A.C. Turek

Black text, green background, a bunch of words highlighted pink I'll have to find ways to entertain myself in the cemetery. Is it too disrespectful to rearrange other people's flowers? Maybe I can people-watch for the rest of my afterlife, making up stories about them, seeing who visits all the time and who comes once a year and who never returns. Dead folks aside, I'm sure there's plenty of life in the cemetery to feel alive myself. If I make it to the cemetery. A wave of claustrophobic terror washes over me. The beast is behind me. I shut my eyes as if I can shut him out, but that makes it worse. Imagined or not, I can feel his breath on the back of my neck. I swing around, but nothing's there. Nothing ever is. I back my way to an empty row of chairs. If my back is against the wall, he can't be behind me. It's insane logic, since there's nothing actually there, but it feels right. I hover over the arm of one of the chairs, my legs folded like I truly sit on them. Shannon always laughed when I sat on stuff, but I love it. I can only touch material sometimes, usually when I'm right next to Shannon. When I was right next to her, I mean. Think of all the headstones there are to sit on in a graveyard. If I even get there. He's still here. Closer than ever.

One tomb loomed taller than the others. As we approached it, a shape carved into the pediment below the building’s peak became plain. The belladonna fruit in its five-pointed calyx, flanked on each side by jawless, staring skulls. The iron door was rust red and ajar, as if its occupant had thoughtfully left it open for us. I shivered. The wind bit hard on the mountainside, but the tremble in my bones was rooted elsewhere, in the part of me that still had not processed who Macsen was, and what he was. Dead. Long dead. And gods willing, inside that tomb. “You’re sure that’s him?” Win said. “I think so.” I pointed at the pediment. “That’s the seal he uses. The belladonna fruit. And of course the asshole would be in the biggest crypt on the hill.”

As they rode from the keep, they passed the Tor itself. It was much larger than Rushak had imagined it would be—a low, gently sloping hill at least the length and breadth of the park beneath Ralla Etania. A flat face dropping into a short trench interrupted its otherwise perfect roundness. Carved pillars stretched to nowhere from its level summit. Rushak shivered, unnerved. It was a TOMB. Even now, as he rode past, the bodies of dead kings lay trapped inside where they had lain for greatcycles, unreturned to the earth. A hiss rustling the low grass. A howl buried under the earth. Cries of spirits who had long forgotten the meaning of freedom. Once, she met a mystic who incarcerated demons’ souls inside statues modelled in their likenesses, and hoarded these bedevilled effigies in an underground lair they called a crypt. This place must serve the same purpose, but instead of statues, the slabs served as the instruments through which a myriad of voices chanted their torment. “It’s a cemetery. Or at least designed after one.” Ashrah frowned. “What is a cemetery?” “It’s where some humans lay their dead to rest.” Smoke gestured at the stone slabs. “We write their names and a phrase that reminds us of them on tombstones like those.” “For what purpose?” “Just…” He shrugged, fidgeted with his fingers. “So we can visit their resting places and pay our respects. Offer them prayers and gifts. Talk to them.” “That does not sound right. My experience tells me that mortals cannot easily interact with the Astral Plane.”

Just think; the tentacled monstrosity we saw in the lighthouse may have started out as nothing more than a fisherman’s abandoned lunch; a plate of calamari tossed over a wall.” But Edwards must have been more spooked by the tentacles than Kenneth had realized, for the moment he mentioned the Tyrant, he abruptly changed the subject.

Because I have nothing better to do than push around a little triangle piece on a toy." But, as the movie progresses, my comments taper off. It really is SPOOKY if you examine it from the humans' point-of-view instead of the ghost's. Shivers crawl up my spine as the ghost leaves a handprint on the fogged-up glass of the woman's shower stall. The scene switches to the next morning, sunshine filling their kitchen as the couple bickers about breakfast, but the creepiness doesn't dissipate. I'm shivering for reals now. I slam my eyes shut. The beast is closing in. I can feel him nearer than ever. "B-Blake?" My voice sounds tiny and wavering. He's not here, of course. He's next door. I fly through the wall, hoping to leave the beast on the other side, but he sticks with me. "Blake!" He's not in the seats where I thought I left him. Are they the wrong seats? No, he's not nearby. Where is he? I exit the theater, yelling his name, searching desperately, as every second the beast feels closer and Blake further.

I stomp into the backyard like the child Mom just accused me of being and greet Marigold. Instead of giving me her usual sassy bleat, she spooks like a hungry bear just hopped her fence. “What’s gotten into you?” I say out loud. She gazes suspiciously at me and my milk bucket, the same me with the same milk bucket who comes in here every single day at about the same time. “All right,” I say. “I’ll get the eggs while you calm down.”

Tip-tap-tip. It resonated from every pot. Tiny fingers tapping on the sides as they found their way out. Ghostly slithers emerged, all clad in their ragged shrouds. Their teeth chattering away as they became solid. Tip-tap-tip. Tip-tap-tip. Dozens of tiny pixies, some smaller and others larger than Toby. Their huge eyes stared at Hazel, awaiting her orders. Here was another widow they were charged to help but one with no home. "The..the nuns," she quivered. "They took it all from you." Hazel was looking down at Toby and then across at the convent, hoping he at least could interpret her feelings. A grin spread across his round face and he turned around before striding towards the convent. Thankfully, the other pixies began to follow and Hazel watched her son leave her. "Toby," she called after him. "Your name is Toby." And then she waited. Waited until she could hear the nuns scream.

Noble walked through the graveyard, the recently fallen leaves were crunching under his feet. They had been searching for this Bruxa for days and hadn’t gotten any closer to finding her. The body count was piling up. Noble was determined to stop her, even if it meant he needed to be in this spooky graveyard. “Hello, hunter.” Noble stopped mid-step, looking around and not seeing anything. He tensed as he grabbed the silver stake from his jacket. “Have we not talked about how that won’t do any damage to me?” I jumped off the roof of a nearby mausoleum. “Nyx.” Noble let out a soft breath. “You fucking prick.” I clicked my tongue, “I could hear you from the courtyard. Once again, you are being unnecessarily loud. The Bruxa can probably hear you, which is why we have not found her.” “Are you always this judgmental?” “I have had 4,500 years to perfect it.” I grinned as I quipped playfully as he looked at Noble.
