##accessibility
As a blind dude, your images mean nothing to me without an alt-text description. I know it’s a pain & I have zero expectations of you using this #Accessibility tool so thoughtfully provided by #BlueSky but I appreciate every effort. It doesn’t have to be The Great Gatsby but please include me 😎

My government won’t let me drive cars, it believes being legally blind makes it “not safe”, or something.

My government refuses to supply large info signs, an accurate app or clear announcements on train stations.

One restriction is reasonable, the other is not.

This is what #accessibility means.

RFK says he wants to protect our children from autism while his admin cuts all DEIA programs. Programs for people with disabilities. Including autism. So...RFK will protect your kids from autism but if they already have autism he'll hurt them??? Make it make sense.

Introducing the Bluesky Altometer:

altometer.atdev.pro

This is an project #atproto that tracks image posts for alt text. It keeps track of the percentage of posts it has seen (since the last database reset) that are *missing* alt text.

The goal here is to increase the #accessibility of Bluesky.

For a lot of folks, if you post without #AltText this is what they see (myself included).

For some folks, the labeller will simply remove the posts from their feed entirely.

#Accessibility leads to better visibility.

Kinda hate that it includes me in my own starter pack but I started putting this together. If you are an artist who consistently (always, without exception) uses alt text (not just "my OC" or "Taffy being so silly!" type stuff), please let me know and I'll add you in.

📝 New post!

`aria-label` and `aria-labelledby` aren't allowed on divs, spans, and other static text elements out of the box, and *most* screenreaders won't announce them.

#accessibility #a11y
Don’t Use aria-label on Static Text Elements
Don’t use the aria-label or aria-labelledby attributes on divs, spans, or other elements representing static/noninteractive text-level semantics, unless you’re also updating roles.

We're entering a dark period in US #accessibility.

The White House home page has a bunch of links with "aria-hidden" and "tabindex=-1".

This hides the links from assistive tech like screen readers & makes them unreachable with just a keyboard.

Critical #WCAG compliance errors! But who can sue?

The Amazon bashing is coming back around.

I’d like to reiterate that yes, Amazon is evil, but it’s a very real tho inadvertent #accessibility tool for very very many of us.

Stop criticizing us for trying to live.

Over the years, I've heard lots of folks say that they don't really know what to write for alt-text accessibility.

So ... as promised - here are some handy #Accessibility guides!

I've written these from the perspective of #SciComm material, but they can be generalised to any field.

bumping to encourage alt text!

will link more in the replies below, every quoted post is likely to be a thread, so dig through for important info!

#Accessibility #AltText

⬇️ 🧵
selfish reasons to use alt text:

- use SEO terms that to be picked up in the alt text *as a natural part* of effective image description

- show off writing/communication skills in alt text

- point out image/art details that might otherwise be missed

- greater peace of mind on #accessibility

🥰💜.

do remember to add alt text to your images!
you'll be throwing away reach if you don't use alt text!
also it's morally correct!

I'm not dunking on this author but y'all, these fun fonts make life hell for screen readers, because they aren't set up to parse them to words. If you want people with visual disabilities to read your posts or pick up your books, this isn't it. #accessibility #TheGoodPlace #HereToHelp
