##bioacoustics
Where, exactly, does learning happen in the brain?

Out today in @nature.com, we identify a synaptic locus of birdsong learning and show that the circuit can be tuned to make birds learn faster - but at a cost. Read on👇 #neuroskyence 🧪 #prattle 💬 #bioacoustics

Back from a successful trip out to sea to turnover some of our #bioacoustics equipment! No photos to share from this trip, but here's an oldie for good measure 🐳 we were pretty worried about the equipment not coming back up this time, but everything went smoothly. Now for data processing... #MySci

Latesky #bioacoustics posting! The visual here is a spectrogram, a graph of sound with time on the x-axis, frequency on the y-axis, & loudness as color. Here we see (& hear) 2 loud calls from a gray seal! You can also see 2 little pulses ~20 Hz from a fin whale, a little too low for human hearing 🐳

A completed 4th trip marks the end of a successful #bioacoustics field season until winter comes around again! And with that, I’ve also officially survived my first academic year as a PhD student! So excited to focus on research this summer! Please enjoy these celebratory GOM fieldwork crabs 🦀🧪🌊

🧪Before the day begins, meerkats share a unique ritual. After emerging from their burrows, they spend up to an hour "sunning" to warm up for the day. During this quiet time, they produce soft, tonal "sunning calls". Just standing, sunbathing, and calling. But why❓ #bioacoustics #meerkats #kalahari

Back from today’s local fieldwork redeploying our SoundTraps at two locations where they will stay for the duration of winter! This is for #bioacoustics research being done in one of our partner labs studying river soundscapes, particularly in the context of dam removal! 🧪

1/ 🧵Bird songs and calls are an important way that people experience the natural world. They’re also one of the key means of surveying bird populations. In this #BOU2025 talk I will review @btobirds.bsky.social research to explore opportunities and challenges of #bioacoustics in #ornithology

Okay my lil #bioacoustics brain is freaking out, video opens so many doors! Not a bat scientist, but I recorded these bats echolocating locally. Time expansion playback to make their ultrasonic vocals audible 😊

Gonna prep some whale sounds to share, what species do ya'll wanna hear? 🐳🧪

Love to see this:

Canada’s largest Indigenous-led protected area, Manitoba’s Seal River watershed, inching closer to reality

#Bioacoustics was key to this so we had a key leader on @mongabay.bsky.social’s podcast (news.mongabay.com/podcast/podc...) not long ago

@thenarwhal.ca has the news:
Manitoba’s Seal River watershed closer to permanent protection | The Narwhal
The watershed surrounds the province’s ‘last truly wild river.’ Could it soon be a huge new protected area?

Ok, reinforcement learning fans: RL is great, but what do we do when there's no obvious reward from the environment? What about perfecting a golf swing or a foxtrot or a musical performance? We may have an answer. A tale of 🐦 🎶 + 🧠. 🧵1/ #bioacoustics #prattle 💬 #neuroai #compneuro

Starting to be able to both speak & smell for the first time in over a week! Hoping this means some quick recovery ahead juuust in time🤞🏼

The marine forecast looks good so far for setting sail Tues to do #bioacoustics fieldwork! Final word from the boat tomorrow! 🦑🧪🌿

Bats wearing tiny mics reveal how the fliers avoid rush hour collisions
As thousands of bats launch nightly hunting, the cacophony of a dense crowd should stymie echolocation, a so-called “cocktail party nightmare.”

Do birds tune their songs to their hearing?

Is there tight coevolution between avian vocal signals and hearing-or do signallers and perceivers evolve more loosely?

It turns out perfect tuning is not required...
