Queensland Theatre Company Announces 2027 Season Featuring New Adaptations of Little Women and Romeo + Juliet
Queensland Theatre Company (QTC) has unveiled its 2027 season, featuring two major new adaptations: a stage version of Louisa May Alcott's 'Little Women' co-adapted by Brisbane playwright Kathryn Marquet and Maxine Mellor, and a First Nations-inspired 'Romeo + Juliet' by Isaac Drandic and Kamarra Bell-Wykes. The 'Little Women' adaptation explores themes of female ambition, creative fulfillment, and the challenges of balancing personal aspirations with societal expectations, resonating with contemporary feminist discourse. Marquet, who identifies with Jo March's character, emphasizes the relevance of the story in today's context where young women navigate complex choices about career, family, and identity. The production will star Brisbane actor Courtney Cavallaro as Jo March, with direction by Bridget Boyle. The 'Romeo + Juliet' adaptation reimagines Shakespeare's classic through a First Nations perspective, exploring how Indigenous cultures experience time, love, and connection differently from Western European interpretations. Artistic director Daniel Evans highlighted the importance of centering Queensland artists and addressing challenges facing the local theatre industry, including declining drama education programs and technical production courses. The season also includes other notable productions such as 'An Iliad' starring David Wenham, 'Sweeney Todd', and 'Counting and Cracking', alongside new Australian works like 'My Roman Empire' by Alberto Di Troia. Evans emphasized the need for 'dreaming bigger' in the arts, advocating for ambitious productions that showcase Queensland talent while engaging with national and international conversations. The company's educational initiatives, including The Scene Project and Young Company, aim to sustain future generations of theatre makers amid declining high school drama enrollments and school offerings. The season reflects QTC's commitment to supporting local artists, fostering cultural diversity, and addressing the evolving landscape of theatre in Queensland and beyond.
