Smalspoor in Oostenrijk is ook echt heel smal. Normale spoorlijnen hebben een breedte van 1435mm. Smalspoor in Zwitserland is meestal 1000mm ofwel meterspoor. In Oostenrijk is het doorgaans 760mm. Dat is echt heel smal en ziet er haast komisch uit. (Foto van de Zillertalbahn ter referentie).

Zweedse treinen verder door laten rijden Finland in of vice versa is overigens niet mogelijk. Beide landen hebben een andere spoorbreedte: Zweden heeft normaalspoor (1435mm) en Finland heeft Russisch breedspoor (1524mm). Het stukje spoor tussen Haparanda en Tornio heeft beide spoorbreedtes.

You might have noticed the Swedish trains are similar width to Finnish while still on 1435mm tracks - Sweden has a 3.4m wide loading gauge (max permissible vehicle size), whereas Finland's is 3.5m - only 10cm wider. Newer lines allow 3.6m in Sweden.

Normaal moet je in Zweisimmen overstappen, want 2 spoorbreedtes. Tegenwoordig rijdt er ook een paar x per dag een toeristentrein wél door. De trein rijdt door deze installatie, waarbij de assen van de trein worden ingeschoven van normaalspoor (1435mm) naar smalspoor (1000mm) of vv. Bijzonder.
