#1435mm
Galicia (and Asturias) still demand gauge-conversion 1435mm:

Rautatiet. On Eurooppa 1435mm ja sitten tämä venäjän blokki 1520-24mm, jossa me olemme.

Elbląskie to podejrzewam, że mają rozstaw 1000mm. Duńskie, raczej normalnotorowe - 1435mm.

Smalspoor in Oostenrijk is ook echt heel smal. Normale spoorlijnen hebben een breedte van 1435mm. Smalspoor in Zwitserland is meestal 1000mm ofwel meterspoor. In Oostenrijk is het doorgaans 760mm. Dat is echt heel smal en ziet er haast komisch uit. (Foto van de Zillertalbahn ter referentie).

Do you think the dude who first designed the standard Roman chariot knew how much he was affecting?1435mm is the width of roman chariots, most trains in the world, and hardware that need to be moved said rail like rocket stages. The width some dude was like “yea, works” thousands of years ago.

Me too. But so much damage is already done, unless those facilities get completely destroyed it’ll always be cheaper and more efficient to rebuild there.
It’s like how the spacing of Roman chariots defined the standard rail gauge, and cause of these deals, max rail-able rocket diameter (1435mm)

Is there enough potential traffic for an extra 1435mm track?
September 7, 2026 at 2:03 PM
Almost. Baltics in final phase of laying 1435mm Euro gauge for the Rail Baltica service, connecting Tallinn through to Warsaw. Nice as a tourist, also, part of our transformation to a 'Schengen' style allied military zone, for speed of logistics and manoeuvres.

Finland by July 2027.

Military mobility is reshaping Lithuania’s railways
Military mobility is driving Lithuania's railway rebuild, from Rail Baltica to NATO logistics hubs and a 1435mm gauge shift. See the engineering plan.

6/n #BalticTour Warsaw-Vilnius stage. Change train at Mockava border station in the middle of nowhere as Lithuania mainly uses broad railway gauge 1520mm (based on Russian) compared to standard 1435mm European gauge.

Stick to 'standard' (1435mm, four feet 8.5 inches in 'jurassic speak') to start. Other words, HO track. 1/87 scale. It's relatively compact. If you're space-limited, 'N', 1/150 is OK.

The missing bit of HSL Taboabdela - Ourense is under construction.
So, yes by 2032 or so, there can be a continuous 1435mm HSL on Madrid - Santiago de Compostela.

A Coruña - Santiago - Vigo will be another story, though.

It will require conversion of 1 track after the other.

Short-term, it would make sense to extend the Canary from Villefranche-de-Conflent - Vernet-les- Bains to Prades - Molitg-les-Bains.

Just by re-gauging the 1435mm line...

Elne - Céret - Arles-sur-Tech should reopen, yes, as part of RER Perpignan.

And Ripoll - Sant Joan de les Abadesses.

@jon Pardon my ignorance here is this record on a single train with variable gauge ? Finland is 1524mm, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, etc are 1435mm, Spain and Portugal are 1668mm, though there is high speed 1435 in Spain to Seville. or is this longest journey on […]

I’d like to politely point out that all Eurostar trains are 1435mm 🙂

That's a question for a fortune teller, not me :D

Capacity-wise the full station layout is needed if 1435mm ever reaches Riga
July 31, 2026 at 12:44 PM
Station building on this side will be completed this year, 2 more years for OCS and CCS for 1520mm tracks.

No idea when if ever 1435mm will reach into Riga

Latour de Carol - Enveigt, 1979.

From the Left to the Right:

. Express to Toulouse M
(Mostly DEV carriages)

. Omnibus from Barcelona S
(S-5000/8000 carriages, loco-hauled)

. Train Jaune to/from Villefranche de Conflent.

In those days, the 1668mm+3kV 🛤️ crossed 1 of the 1435mm+1.5kV 🛤️.
