Fedir threw the machine into a kick, impacting on the shoulders of the barghest and twisting the body in with an audible crack coming through his cockpit speakers. The death throes still let the hooves crash onto the ground, one last fire wave now screaming across sandy terrain. His face fell in horror as he saw the target. “No!” Abigail noticed the wave of fire in her peripherals, speeding towards the refinery. She finished off her target as fast as she could, switching to the projector. She fought through the tiredness in her body and reached into the universe as quickly as she could gather. “Glaciere!" It was too late. The ice beam missed, freezing the dirt behind the wave. The magic fire impacted on the first container, starship hydrogen igniting a spectacular chain reaction; a raging inferno soon enveloping the whole complex.

“Yep.” He replied. “The ones thaulms use are just better that what we can produce. Has been that way for four hundred years. Still millenia ahead of us.” The shock made her legs tremble.

“I’ve been here for at least fifteen years.” Robin explained. “The Federation wants to consolidate magic training into the military. Bigger academies can withstand their funding reallocated better, but everyone’s hit hard. Even so, I enjoy working here, in this smaller academy. It feels like I can pass my experience as a retired caller down to others in a way that feels right.” Abigail didn’t mention the audible somberness in her tone. “Here, take them both for free. I don’t mind helping someone who traveled all this way for nothing.”

I didn't actually write any narrative lines on my rare day off work. I spent all day tinkering with my magic system. Simplifying it, firming it up, and making charts and graphics that will only ever end up in an appendix. So I'm just submitting that.
Chart showing the different types of base magical bits. The Church of the Creator calls them Ephemeral/Spirit (gold), Flame (orange), Ice (white), Shadow (black), Sky (blue), Stone (brown), and Sea (green). The Pagans use the same stuff, but they tie it to emotions and call them, respectively, Love, Joy, Grief, Serenity, Envy, and Anger. There are four basic resonances that can only occur naturally and cannot be manipulated by humans: Death (gray), Life (pink), Destiny (silver), and Chance (scintillating). The Church arranges the basic resonances in a seven-pointed star. Each point is opposed/suppressed by the two across from it (connecting lines). Sky is opposed by Stone and Shadow, Ephemeral/Spirit is opposed by Sea and Stone, Ice is opposed by Flame and Sea, Shadow is opposed by Sky and Flame, Stone is opposed by Sky and Ephemeral, Sea is opposed by Ice and Ephemeral, and Flame is opposed by Ice and Shadow. (Sea and Stone are seen as the two forces most responsible for shaping the physical world, so they oppose Ephemeral, which is spiritual and non-physical) And here's how the Pagans arrange it. Same general deal, they just point the star up instead of down. The same basic energies are oppositional, the Pagans just call them different names, and the emotion type is assumed to be the purest possible expression of that emotion. Envy is opposed by Love and Serenity, Anger is opposed by Love and Grief/Sadness, Joy is opposed by Grief /Sadness and Fear, Serenity is opposed by Envy and Fear, Love is opposed by Envy and Anger, Grief/Sadness is opposed by Joy and Anger, and Fear is opposed by Joy and Serenity.

How he’d been an absolutely terrible cook. He’d literally burned water once, putting so little of it into the pot that most of it evaporated and left the remnants sizzling until smoke appeared.

She gulped, nodding. “Abigail Eras, uh, Ready for laun-'' The chime played and before anything else registered in her mind, she was being thrown screaming forward, her hands white knuckling on her controls, grabbing for dear life as the g-forces crunched her unprepared body into her seat. The Capilupus passed through the energy barrier before the indents catapulted the machine into the violet sky.

Abigail stopped noticing the passage of time, conciseness sinking deeper into the meditative trance. “Feel the universe…” her mind repeatedly whispered. Shards of light pricked into the darkness, landing in her hands, fluttering off as fast as they came. “Light the way…” She gave chase, leaping into the air. Cradling them, she noted the tingle of her soul intertwining, resonating with the vibrant energy; yet they were drained. She released them. “I’m sorry.”

It was the end of the day when the trio met in Fera’s room. “Okay, let me start with basics,” she began, magic bark growing over arms. “Magic is a universal energy field that anyone can use.” “Anyone?” Abigail echoed. “You've already shaped it!” Lios answered. “The projector uses your will to shape the bolts.” “Oh. It's more than a laser…” “You need to have an awakening to channel it yourself,” Fera continued. “That’s also how you find what paths call to you.” Abigail went to speak, but yelped when the half-doe lit a fireball in the off hand. “The majority of mages aren't limited to using one kind of magic, just those who've awakened under the worst of circumstances.” Lios nodded. “Yep, a tragic awakening can totally limit what magic you can use. I would know.”

The morning after the invasion of Liyto was permeated with tension, the powers in this world had chosen open conflict once again. While most onboard the Comet were still sleeping, excitement of terror and duty prevailed in the aft bay. The crew was busy unloading Ammo, food, and other miscellaneous items from their pallets carting the smaller boxes off to their destinations. “One thousand years of war…” Abigail breathed, wishing she didn’t look at the bow catapult. Even with their weapons stowed, the 13 meter armored wolf and 9 meter tall sniper eagle; these magical machines taking up mecha bays one and two of the ancient carrier’s through-deck hangar were key in reminding of her displacement

The three entered an elevator as Fera started again. “But magic in the transformation coats our bodies—” “Like the most badass blanket ever!” Lios interjected. “—To make the suits, then the armor. Then thaulms re-construct around us.” “You know what’s going on?” Abigail wondered. Lios nodded. “Yep! I go ‘Ha! Hiyah!” Fera allowed the woman to feel the smoothness of one panel. “It can’t take more than pistol calibers; it’s mainly to be locked in by the console like a harness.” “You know, so I don’t become a Lios flavored caparrones from G-forces during combat. It tones them down to manageable levels.”
