#486dx
Eravamo a metà degli anni 90. Il 486DX 66 sembrava un fulmine con DOS 6.22. Il primo assemblato, quanti ricordi.

The 486DX/2 was the choice for MS-DOS gamers in the mid-90s. Paired with a decent SoundBlaster.

scored a pristine 486DX today

this was my first "real" computer back in the 90s. I grew up with DOS and eventually we got windows95, and eventually 98

but this is 2026 and Im wondering, what operating system would you install nowadays? should I go full DOS? is there something meaner/leaner

After a pair of troublesome 386SX machines, it’s nice to clean up a classic 486 that appears to just work.

Southwest is running Winders 3.1, so I guess the 486DX lives.

Today's CPU is the mighty Intel 486DX. The introduction of this chip in 1989 provided PC users with a huge boost in performance. In the early 90's I used my 486 to manage large city budgets using a package called SimCity 2000. Serious work was involved with that I can tell you!

System Shock came in a big box and on nine 3.5" floppies when it was first released. It required MS-DOS 5.0, a measly 35 megs of HD space, 4 megs of RAM (8 were recommended!), and rendered its world in blistering 256-color VGA graphics running on a 486DX/33 (a 486DX/50 was also recommended!).

Growing up when I did, this 486DX and the Motorola 68040 are my quintessential processors.

does DOS 6.22 exist for ARM computers because lol if I could benchmark this lil thing against my 486DX laptop from the mid 90s
see like it has two little floppy disk slots (i guess they're called SD cards, but they're basically little floppy disks,)

also: a usb-otg that'll take a hub, hdmi-out, WiFi/bluetooth- all on a 1.5ghz quad core ARM CPU with GPU capabilities- pretty versatile computer!! sure outspecs my 2010 netbook

I’m tellin’ ya - I should start making repair videos again. <ahem>

So the +5V rail is smooth at power up now on the EISA board. No POST codes on the analyzer card. It draws 28w and does nothing. 486DX runs warm. All other chips seem cool. Dunno.

So, guess what I'm going to be up to if I can clear my workbench to make room?

486DX or nothing! How can I live without a math coprocessor? 😂

ai will only be good when it’s been reduced to the original craiyon model that couldn’t spit out anything but the most surreal globby dream sharts. Then make that run on a 486DX pc so it can only output at 320x240

Trying to get X-Wing running on a 486DX when I was 13 by editing autoexec.bat files to set extended/expanded memory and IRQ/DMA for the sound card with game port kickstarted my entire career trajectory.

Having that one scary hard up escort mission show up in the X-Wing books made me so happy.
