#70GW
FWIW i am largely pro-data centre but you know, i do have pretty strong reservations about adding 40-70GW in super inefficient natgas power production

In the last 5 years China has installed 1.3 terawatts of renewables, 11GW of Nuclear, 220GW of coal and 70GW of gas.

China is in the energy race while the West is in wars* over old technology.

* Actual wars and propaganda.

in my state there is more than 70GW in the datacenter pipeline. our entire states' peak power consumption was hit last year, at 24GW. planned projects aren't going to be built because there is no universe in which it is possible to build them
Almost half of US data centers planned for 2026 are expected to be delayed or canceled. One big reason is the shortage of electrical equipment, such as transformers, switchgear and batteries. US doesn't have manufacturing capacity, forcing it to rely on imports.

They are going to drive ~70GW of new fossil fuel generation by 2030 which is bad

It is quite sad how there is no reportage (for obvious reasons) or even a proper discussion that the new Chinese mega dam with 60-70GW capacity is coming up on Tibetan land which China claims for itself. Climate journalism on China is limited to coal emissions and RE prowess. There is no other kind

We have some ludicrously large estimate of potential capacity i think 70GW? basically we have north sea-quality wind and we can move insanely fast on it

The world’s biggest wind and solar project, planned for a remote desert region in Western Australia, has lodged its application for state environmental approvals with a (checks notes) 70GW of wind and solar capacity – as big as the country’s main grid. 🔌💡

For reference: all of Belgium's current electrical power usage is about 70GW.

Our power providers have requests for new data centers that project 70GW by 2034.

The cost is not nothing, of course. A 70-80% increase in the cost of solar modules would mean about EUR 5bn/year extra cost or 10 EUR per person needed to deploy the 70GW/year of solar the EU needs to hit 2030 clean energy targets.

BBC #Countryfile has investigated the spread of data centres in rural areas and their demands for energy, water and land. 70GW of data centres in the planning pipeline. Industry says 8 to 15GW will actually be built. Hard to imagine what benefit could justify burning 250W for each UK adult or child.

What an incredible achievement for China's renewable energy. Installing 93GW in one month is astonishing.

To put that in perspective the UK's entire capacity is estimated at 18GW and it will take us until 2035 to increase that to 70GW.
