#70GW
BBC #Countryfile has investigated the spread of data centres in rural areas and their demands for energy, water and land. 70GW of data centres in the planning pipeline. Industry says 8 to 15GW will actually be built. Hard to imagine what benefit could justify burning 250W for each UK adult or child.

FWIW i am largely pro-data centre but you know, i do have pretty strong reservations about adding 40-70GW in super inefficient natgas power production

August 13, 2026 at 9:50 PM
August 13, 2026 at 9:47 PM

We have some ludicrously large estimate of potential capacity i think 70GW? basically we have north sea-quality wind and we can move insanely fast on it

United's Jon Gordon has words for PJM.

PJM announced that new large energy users could be increasing demand by up to 70GW by 2038, underscoring the need for reforms that maintain reliability & keep costs low.

✅ ⬆️ tree planting, nature and peat restoration, home insulation

❌ It's not about nature v farmers: the UK government’s target of 70GW of installed solar by 2035 would take up less than 1% of UK farmland, acc @SolarEnergyUK_

Holland would like a word

Seriously, Modern windmills in California, that's the US btw, China, Germany, India, Brazil...

In US alone over 160gw
In China about 700 gw

Germany, Brazil & India from 35gw to over 70gw

None of those countries, including the US are failing
Trump: "Any time you see windmills, you see a failing country"

Now there's something like 70GW of offshore wind farms under various stages of construction (some planning, some actually pouring concrete and erecting turbines). But even so. To increase the electricity generating capacity to meet the list of new connections waiting for power would be the […]

Dunno - there are 70GW of data servers with applications in the UK - that is roughly twice the entire electricity demand of the rest of the country. They won't all happen of course, but I believe the threat is real.

China is in a world of its own with more than 70GW of new capacity but coal electricity production decreasing by 1.2%. That continues a trend observed for the last 10 years of a decrease in capacity factor for coal

Well AC is increasing quickly - 10-15 million units per year according to Nikit Abhyankar (from a very low base), enough to strain the grid. Obviously the poor suffer most. And yes, just watch the anti-immigration types yell and scream when there's mass migration. www.linkedin.com/posts/nikit-...
India's AC demand peaks at 270 GW, a challenge for the grid | Nikit Abhyankar posted on the topic | LinkedIn
India’s grid met record-breaking peak demand (270 GW) in recent weeks. Room air conditioners were responsible for 60-70GW (~25%) of this peak demand !!! ACs are power guzzlers. A single room AC consu...

“In each remaining year before the next presidential election, BloombergNEF expects to see an additional 70GW of wind, solar and battery capacity built – very close to 2025’s record levels. Hardly the end of clean energy in the US.”

It would cost a load more though. That 70GW would be on considerably fewer sites and easy to build. Splitting to thousands of tiny sites, and even then adding in structural calls, grid connections, licensing, title issues,...
