I know a lot of early 2000s roguelike would have multiple tilesets the player could pick between (ASCII, pixel art at different resolutions)
Similarly, when 8BitGuy made Planet X3 for DOS, he had several different tilesets for the different DOS-era GPUs (Tandy, VGA, etc), which was well received

Iirc the retro community and gaming preservation community local to Texas is pretty inclusive, at least from what I've seen from 8bitguy and a few others on YouTube. So at least there's that for that one specific type of thing there
