If I won this I wouldn't tell anyone but subscribers would know it because all of my relatable content digressions would slowly morph into nitpicks about Gulfstream jets vs. ACJs.

Ah man getting up in the dark is tough. My son is furious about it this morning.

I’ve seen some efforts to launder January’s reputation on here, but I’m not having it. Things get better so slowly in Jan - February is the truly underrated, fastest improving month

An impressive set of recommendations to respond to the Hormuz crisis from the EU. I’m not clear whether they’ll be adopted by member states. If they are, I think the EU could be drastically less reliant on fossil fuels within a few years. Can the UK follow suit?

The problem is this hypothesis is contested at best and delusional at worst. There’s scant evidence ditching climate policies would deliver meaningful cuts in energy costs and plenty of reasons to think slower decarbonisation would hand competitive advantage to China et al. bsky.app/profile/acjs...
Not sure one can do about this other than sigh deeply.
But I might as well post the explainer on why net zero isn’t even the main thing pushing up energy bills (it’s gas), as if having a safe planet to live on wasn’t reason enough…

Even have pictures of Bristol trams on my walls

bsky.app/profile/acjs...
And I’ve just realised I’ve got a picture of one of the early horse-drawn trams on my wall (thanks to the amazing old photos stall in St Nick’s market).

This area later became the Tramways Centre. Nowadays the River Frome is all covered over here, and we call it The Centre

The UK’s economic problems are quite deep-rooted. The best summary I can offer is “we don’t make enough valuable, productive stuff and sell it to the world any more”.
Things like planning and energy no doubt play a role in that - but I don’t think they’re enough to fix it on their own

Also, why don't we see any statements from ASC or ACJS on what is happening? Did deleting police misconduct data not wake us up? #criminology #ASC #ACJS #academicbluesky

The ACJS tentative program came out today and I'm ecstatic that my IPV panel got a 2PM slot and has 5 papers (including international participants)! Progress.

See everyone in Denver!

Morning.
2025 is the year the UK needs to start installing a lot more heat pumps - or other low carbon heating systems - if we’re to keep pace with our climate commitments.
A lot of work to do…

Morning Hilary and ORCs everywhere. ACJs are very tricky.
No tree surgery as 15 mins of rain was too much but looking out of sparklingly clean windows at last. Last morning of sewing machine access before super tidy for photos.
Have a good weekend.

Some thoughts from @acjsissons.bsky.social

Again, we gotta wait.

bsky.app/profile/acjs...
I think part of this story (on eligibility for heat pump grants) is likely to be nonsense - I'll explain in a thread below.

But it is clear that the Treasury wants to abolish the ECO levy, which funds upgrades for fuel poor homes. This would be a serious mistake

Why it's the right time to get these houses to convert to heat pumps is explained here bsky.app/profile/acjs...
The UK government is - understandably - looking at helping households with heating oil costs, which have roughly doubled since the Iran invasion.

But what is the right approach. Should there be a 2022-style cap on heating oil prices, subsidised by the government?

bsky.app/profile/acjs... also this feels like quite a vibesy statement - is there a robust evidence base showing this?

Also -'discipline' can mean many things. 0 tolerance for bullying? Ok. Banned from talking when walking between lessons...? Might work for some kids and not for others
I really don’t know what to say about this to be honest, but there it is
August 3, 2026 at 8:07 AM
Yeah. Coincidentally, I saw this appear on my timeline directly before you posted this, which makes excellent points about the other, non-shopping, things that we could have on our high streets instead! bsky.app/profile/acjs...
Some thoughts on high streets based, entirely parochially, on where I live (Bristol).

1. Income really matters

Ultimately, the nice shops - coffee, gelato, hardware, little restaurants, boutiques etc. - are in places where people can afford them. You need to Baumol money into people’s pockets

(and yes, it was totally inspired by @acjsissons.bsky.social's post here bsky.app/profile/acjs...)
Of all the things I would most struggle to explain to young people today is the explosion of adverts for “118” services we had in the early 2000s.

In 2003 (!!) several companies invested heavily in advertising for directory inquiry services (you could call to ask for a phone number to something)

Yeah, I conceded that point - it might *appear* boring but can be very rewarding bsky.app/profile/acjs...
Very much agree with this.

Also - doing the gritty work of reforming and improving the state can be really worthwhile and rewarding (with the right leadership and a fair wind).
There is signal in the Musk/Cummings noise if you clear away the ridiculous egos - reforming the modern state via brute force is, basically, impossible. You can damage things, fire people, cut spending but the vast majority of things the state does are deeply embedded and critical functions.
