Ah man getting up in the dark is tough. My son is furious about it this morning.

I’ve seen some efforts to launder January’s reputation on here, but I’m not having it. Things get better so slowly in Jan - February is the truly underrated, fastest improving month

Why would Europe want to cozy up to the Middle East to the exclusion of the US? Natural gas price divergence is one compelling reason.

As with any review, the ACJS essay also contains some criticisms, questions and concerns and they are super thoughtful and absolutely worth reading too. You can check out the full review here: link.springer.com/article/10.1...

You should probably reread the OP then.

Some thoughts on high streets based, entirely parochially, on where I live (Bristol).

1. Income really matters

Ultimately, the nice shops - coffee, gelato, hardware, little restaurants, boutiques etc. - are in places where people can afford them. You need to Baumol money into people’s pockets

Yeah. Coincidentally, I saw this appear on my timeline directly before you posted this, which makes excellent points about the other, non-shopping, things that we could have on our high streets instead! bsky.app/profile/acjs...

And this why I think analogies of "adults have to follow rules" aren't helpful. Institutions must also follow rules towards individuals, and must follow the metarule of maintain mutual adaptation.

bsky.app/profile/acjs... also this feels like quite a vibesy statement - is there a robust evidence base showing this?

Also -'discipline' can mean many things. 0 tolerance for bullying? Ok. Banned from talking when walking between lessons...? Might work for some kids and not for others
I really don’t know what to say about this to be honest, but there it is

The problem is this hypothesis is contested at best and delusional at worst. There’s scant evidence ditching climate policies would deliver meaningful cuts in energy costs and plenty of reasons to think slower decarbonisation would hand competitive advantage to China et al. bsky.app/profile/acjs...
Not sure one can do about this other than sigh deeply.
But I might as well post the explainer on why net zero isn’t even the main thing pushing up energy bills (it’s gas), as if having a safe planet to live on wasn’t reason enough…

It's worse than not checking the logic - it's also that it's decreasing the effort involved in producing the 'detailed work' (while also reducing the quality). There's a hugely problematic assymmetry here, I think it's comparable to the emergence of spam email. bsky.app/profile/acjs...
But if people are also using LLMs to do more of the detailed work, AND we’re using LLMs to filter out the knowledge, there is a risk no one really checks the underlying logic.

(To be clear, this is 100% already a risk in non-LLM work, even in peer-reviewed academia)

OK, one more: @andyscollick.bsky.social might appreciate the link between currently very poor info in the UK on benefits of various types of heat-pumps-cum-air-cons, relatively cheap & easy to install, thus faciliating domestic electrification, and security risks. bsky.app/profile/acjs...
Very interesting report by E3G and King's College London.

It considers gas use in British homes as a national security issue, both in terms of cost and risk of supplies being turned off.
Especially striking for me is the call for a more decentralised energy system - with homes playing a big role

It seems to have become commonplace to blame net zero for Britain’s high energy bills and/or weak job market…
… and I guess I’ll have to explain again why there is very little evidence of this.

Britain has plenty of economic problems; net zero is not high on that list (though climate change is)
