Exactly.

Maybe they thought it said AEMC.

AEMC just ruled poles-and-wires monopolies can charge EVERY household for EV chargers, "market failure" meaning "private companies were competing too well." $1/year they say. Nothing in Australian infrastructure pricing has ever stayed at $1/year. Oz is the monopoly paradise.

Can gas networks be trusted to price fairly on their own?

The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) thinks so, according to its latest draft determination on gas networks in transition.

We disagree.

Yes. And you know who agrees with me that changes are needed? Bowen, the AEMC and more. Including the folks saying "why must everything be approved right now". Final rule making from AEMC is due at the end of October.

Much more needs to be done to support households as gas networks decline. The AEMC has an opportunity to change course and put the interests of consumers first in its final decision in December.

The AEMC has chosen instead to give gas network businesses the benefit of the doubt on how fast gas prices rise, shifting power away from the regulator and toward businesses that are asking consumers to pay more, faster. This would leave consumers more exposed.
August 27, 2026 at 2:29 AM
While the AEMC has agreed that consumers face real risks, it has proposed a draft rule that would weaken the regulator’s ability to control price increases.

Australia advances data centre energy policy on three fronts as battery storage emerges as key compliance tool
The AEMC, the rule-maker for the NEM, set out four recommendations, which were delivered to the Energy and Climate Change Ministerial Council on 28 July and published on 5 August. The first requires data centres to offset their electricity consumption using certificates linked to new renewable energy generation through the existing Renewable Electricity Guarantee of Origin (REGO) scheme, closing the loophole that would otherwise allow a data centre to purchase certificates from existing solar or wind assets without triggering new build. The second requires data centres to contract for firming capacity alongside those certificates, addressing the risk that renewable energy certificates alone do not guarantee dispatchable supply. The third requires data centres above a certain threshold to register as NEM market participants, giving AEMO real-time visibility of large inverter-based loads and the regulatory hook to enforce the firming obligation. Meanwhile, the fourth supports demand flexibility and co-location of generation and storage through connection agreements. Tightening rules for data centres As PV Tech reported, the AEMC and NSW moved simultaneously on 5 August to tighten data centre energy and grid access rules. The NSW ‘Electricity Infrastructure Investment Amendment Bill 2026’ introduces REZ-style powers that give the state energy minister the authority...

A good move.

But WTF have they squibbed so bad on REGO design. Or AEMC squibbing on opportunity to ensure datacentre explosion comes with additional, matched, and local renewables.
August 7, 2026 at 2:05 AM
Even the fed position doesn't look great. Ketan Joshi was mentioning loopholes & grey areas in announcements so far - "expectations" rather than regulation; AEMC asked to define ‘new’, ‘additional’ & ‘clean’; dropping the 100% renewable mandate & inserting "firming"; more credits junk, etc.
August 6, 2026 at 8:47 AM
If it's all bullshit - good luck trying to build a datacenter between now and January if you ignore it. Especially since you've already been told be AEMC that this is what's happening, and the States have been told to get on the bus or get under it.
