#AEMO’s
Yes, it's GAS SHORTAGE BEAT UP WEEK, with AEMO's annual fret-fest due out soon.

I'll paste last year's winners below.
Brilliant pre-emptive strike from @australiainstitute.org.au - on how media frames AEMO's annual gas report as a fake crisis requiring urgent, panicked building of new gas infrastructure

AEMO's report shows two key things:
1. Australia has an abundance of gas. Most of it is exported.
2. Demand for gas is plummeting.

No wonder Big Gas is kicking up a stink. The real question is, will our Governments keep throwing favours at an industry that is rapidly becoming obsolete? #auspol

Scary, scary! Save us from nasty renewables, lovely coal!

I love that the word "blackout" appears just 2 times in AEMO's 154 page report, yet makes the SMH headline!

AEMO’s 10-year energy reliability forecast says there is enough new solar, wind and storage in the pipeline to fill the gap of retiring coal, and meet rising demand.

Love this chart from AEMO's latest QED.
Look at the growth of wind, solar and battery discharge across all hours of the day!
And the corresponding dramatic reduction in coal & gas supply.

Considering the role of gas in the gov's energy policy and the hype around gas 'shortages', AEMO's forecast of near-zero gas use for electricity out to 2035 has had very little coverage.

proving that "baseload" literally isn't a thing anymore
AEMO’s running trials to power grids with zero coal, zero gas, and zero spinning metal. Just batteries, solar, and wind. Fossil fuels? Not invited. #auspol #energy reneweconomy.com.au/aemo-turns-t...

AEMO says 10 yrs to run Australia’s grid on 100% renewables. Try 5. Rooftop solar already dominates days—grid-forming batteries & VPPs will scale faster than anyone expects to cover night load. Mild days at 100% before 2030? Locked in. The grid’s flipping. ⚡☀️🔋 #AEMO #EnergyTransition #BESS #LFP
AEMO puts grid-forming batteries and household devices at centre of roadmap to 100 pct renewables
AEMO’s new engineering priorities are on getting most out of grid forming inverters and consumer energy resources at it maps path to 100 per cent renewables.

CSIRO & AEMO’s GenCost report started in 2018 under the coalition govt -it has found firmed renewables are cheapest new-build energy option (The Kaxon)

Coalition requested GenCost include nuclear in 2023-24.

It found nuclear the most EXPENSIVE option🙄

-Coalition proceed to rubbish the report🙄

Really fascinating chart from AEMO's latest QED: a worrying visual demonstration of the "floor" for coal-fired power stations in Australia.

Solar, wind, storage and hydro keeps turning the screws on coal in Australia but you can see them hitting their "minimum generation" point

I am old enough to remember one (1) hype cycle ago, where AEMO's big issue was figuring out how we were going to power all the electrolysis.

Gas use for electricity generation hit its second lowest level since 2014 last year. Especially notable given the very cold and windless winter we had last year.

The trajectory is down down down. Big batteries and new renewables are going to crush future gas use.

Later this week, you might hear media stories about "gas shortages". It's part of an annual pantomime starring the gas industry, certain media outlets, and a gas supply statement called "GSOO". Here's our analysis @australiainstitute.org.au @rodcampbell.bsky.social @stephenlongaus.bsky.social
Media coverage of AEMO’s Gas Statement of Opportunities
The annual release of AEMO’s Gas Statement of Opportunities invariably triggers coverage suggesting that Australia, one of the world’s biggest gas producers, is about to run short of gas.

Much, much more coal is burned under the LNP plan than the ALP plan. The LNP plan also burns much, much more coal than the least ambitious AEMO scenario (which it is notionally based on).

AEMO’s latest ISP says wind, solar and storage still cheapest option to replace coal, but warns that slower rollout may result in missed targets

And get this, the headline is:

Blackout risk: Grid 'not ready' for coal plant closures, solar surge

Not only is "blackout risk" absent from AEMO's report & media release, but 'not ready' doesn't appear either. Has quote marks around it, but no one says it in the story, report or media release.

A flurry of new solar and battery projects has appeared in #AEMO’s grid management system, driving home just how popular the two technologies have been with investors. But in the #EPBC queue, it’s all about wind.

The diner postpones a choice while quietly accepting gas in the meantime. AEMO’s 2026 electricity roadmap includes gas backup alongside renewables, storage and networks.

Labor’s Cheaper Home Batteries rebate and other state-based incentives are driving uptake of distributed storage. But will they fit the bill for AEMO’s ISP?

Batteries now set electricity prices more than any other technology in Australia

AEMO's Q1 2026 report found grid-scale battery capacity doubled in a year, cutting gas generation to its lowest level since the late 1990s.

A key part in Australian debate nobody has resolved:

Plug-in kit earns no STCs, is invisible to AEMO's DER register, gets no feed-in tariff

At 800W one per household that's ok, but it's the argument the networks will use, so it's the one worth pre-empting

Nevertheless it'd be of value to renters
