#AI/LLM
We really need some good reporting on why economists are especially susceptible to the AI-LLM industry's propaganda
Mark Carney says he doesn’t use generative AI as much as he’d like, but that he’s brought in a Google executive to “transform government” and enable more AI use.

Basically, the answer of someone completely bought in on the fantasy of AI who refuses to recognize that isn’t reflected in reality.

I feel like whatever your position in AI is, everyone should be able to agree that nobody should get an automated message, LLM-generated email, or interaction with a chatbot that isn't clearly marked as such? That seems like such an obvious baseline of just like, treating people with respect.

This is clearly AI right? Dort prompted AI to make this nonsense; it's got the cadence.

Also, only an AI LLM would be wrong in all the ways this is wrong.
man some people really took that Little Mermaid casting hard

(Note: I apologize for using "AI" as a shorthand for large language models in the above thread. This site has a character limit and sometimes does not leave space for nuance. "AI" is a misleading term because there is of course no intelligence in LLM code assistants, only statistics and plagiarism.)

I love how you can tell it's an AI both from the cadence and also because it's wrong in a way an LLM trying to come up with some bullshit is wrong.

It's not enough that he and his LLM buddies have driven up the price of memory, storage and GPUs by 300-1200%

Now they think that any components that are not in THEIR hands is a waste of resources.

...

The popping of the AI bubble can't come fast enough.

this isn't like some website getting battered by ai agents scraping shit, this isn't a forum getting overrun by fake posters, this is someone going "yeah, sure, bring that LLM shit right on in, just slap this sticker on it" and then wondering why their shop is full of dog shit.

AI is not magic, it makes mistakes all the time while programming just like people do. If you just assume the first pass of a program you get from an LLM is good, you are in for so much pain man. You need to assume it is fucked and be applying all kinds of adversarial pressure and testing to it.

Oh it wasn’t even prompting an LLM, it was the result of (I presume) a google search AI summary. That’s… even worse.

for whatever it's worth re #3: i found a set of clearly llm-generated assets that were tagged as non-ai; after having my good-faith comment deleted i just used the report button (with evidence), and the next day it somehow ended up tagged
probably doesn't scale though, not to *this*

@vortexegg.com has described a spectrum of "slop vs care" I find useful because it captures how most ai/LLM related problems aren't really new, but existing harms amplified

in that context we can think of ai as the automation of careless production

i think the thing that will be most satisfying about the AI bubble crashing is people who were like "Heh, AI is the future" going to their favorite LLM and turning it on and getting jack shit because the data center that runs it has been auctioned for spare parts

One of the possible outcomes of policies like this is that authors pre-emptively run their (human-written) work through the AI checker, and then edit it until it no longer flags as AI. At which point we’ve still let an LLM shape the output of what would have been genuine human writing.
