Mmm Armv9 on ITX with SystemReady...

Some have guessed right—this is the Orion O6, a mini ITX motherboard with a 12 (or 8, depending on the day of the week) core Arm SoC.

Been testing for months. Video hopefully later this week.

We recommend any 8th/9th/10th gen Pixel. Pixel 10a support will be experimental for a couple more months but it works fine with a few minor bugs. Pixel 8 moved to ARMv9 and 7 years of support from launch from 5. ARMv9 includes important security features we use much more heavily (MTE, PAC, BTI).

(probably SVE2 if we're being pedantic, making it ARMv9)

ARM provides standard exploit protections used by firmware and software to defend attack exploitation.

Pointer Authentication Codes (PAC) and Branch Target Identication (BTI) are near universal with ARMv9. Memory Tagging Extension (MTE) is more important and often omitted.

We made massive improvements in GrapheneOS to defend against these attacks since January 2024.

For ARMv9 devices, we greatly improved our hardware memory tagging implementation in hardened_malloc, deployed it for the Linux kernel allocators and greatly expanded the use of PAC and BTI across the OS.

MTE support launched with the Pixel 8 when it moved to ARMv9, but the stock OS still doesn't use it by default. In GrapheneOS, we always use it for the Linux kernel and nearly all base OS processes including apps. We provide a toggle to enable it for all user installed apps.

Did a "soft" rework of how graphics in my game are handled, from tile sources to an atlas. More than 128 sprites exported and reimported. Took me 4 days! Saved a single Draw call lol

Hello you fine Internet folks,

Today we return to our SC24 coverage with Fujitsu's Monaka CPU which an ARMv9 based CPU with SVE2 that uses 3D stacking and is due in 2027.

Hope y'all enjoy!

It doesn't include attack surface for a massive set of things which aren't needed for the hardware it supports. The builds are specialized for the devices, such as using pointer authentication codes (PAC), branch target identification (BTI) and hardware memory tagging (MTE) for ARMv9 devices.

We're planning on phasing out support for 32-bit apps on 5th/6th generation Pixels where they're still supported. They were already phased out by Android for 7th generation Pixels and later, and by ARM for 2nd generation ARMv9 Cortex cores onwards.

We use synchronous MTE in the kernel and asymmetric in userspace. In asymmetric mode, it's sync for reads and async for writes. System calls act as a synchronization point for the asynchronous writes. Asymmetric has overhead below -fstack-protector-strong on the initial ARMv9 Cortex cores.

trivia of the day:
the ARMv9 architecture reference manual is ~14000 pages long
the AMD64 architecture programmer's manual is 3347 pages long
the OpenPOWER ISA specification is 1495 pages
and the RISC-V unprivileged specification is merely 670 pages
