Good news that beavers are to be released in Glen Affric and Abriachan forests.
Ireland needs to step up.😀
Must Ireland be virtually the last part of the whole northern hemisphere without beavers, and all the incredible ecological and societal benefits they bring?

As a nation, we can at times be so forward thinking, yet when it comes to nature so damned conservative, obtuse, and unambitious.
Beavers are back 🦫

For the first time in over 400 years, wild beavers will return to the northwest Highlands. Today, the Scottish Government gave the green light for six beaver families to be reintroduced to Glen Affric and Abriarchan forest.

A throwback to this little boathouse up at Abriachan, near Loch Ness. I must have driven past it hundreds of times as a kid, and somehow it has always stayed with me. 💙🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Lovely day with students thinking about community ownership enabling Gaelic revival and ecological restoration.

12.11pm: the sound of a US KC-135 Stratotanker above us.

Profoundly unsettling.

Moved from West to East and stopped at Abriachan hoping for Crested Tit. A few pairs are present and bingo! One in a tit flock. Also 2 Dipper, Arctic Skuas, & 2 Osprey at Cromarty Bridge and Loch Fleet. Tomorrow dawn to dusk … if it stops raining…

The foreman mason for the old PO was my grandfather’s cousin, James MacDonald of Abriachan. (He tried contracting on his own but went bust over a school in Harris; in 1900 he went to Egypt as masonry overseer on the Aswan Dam, where he died of typhoid age 42). Must pass on some archives to you!

In the year to come I don’t want to prioritise writing or feeling—not even love, although I’d always welcome it—or being. I don’t want to seek peace or rest (I haven’t slept a single good night’s sleep this year, despite trying)…
