A small blue butterfly is perched on a plant. This is an Eastern Tailed-Blue, a butterfly which derives its name from the narrow tail on the hind wing. This butterfly is said to be one of the East's most abundant butterflies, having adapted readily to human activities. Typical habitats of the Eastern Tailed-Blue are open, sunny places, including meadows, forest clearings, disturbed areas, and city lots.

An attractive orange butterfly is perched on low vegetation by a roadside in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New Yor. This is a Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui) –a migratory, orange-and-brown butterfly found throughout the Adirondacks from late May through September, with peak numbers in July and August. Often called the thistle butterfly, it thrives in open areas, roadsides, and meadows, where it feeds on nectar and lays eggs.

A medium-sized, black and orange butterfly is posing on a yellow flower. This is a Baltimore Checkerspot, a member of the Brushfoot family found near wet meadows or on old fields in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. They are not a common butterfly in our region. There are only 26 iNaturalist observations of this butterfly in the Adirondack Park. For comparison, there are nearly a thousand observations of the Monarch and nearly 800 observations of the White Admiral within Park boundaries.

A medium-sized orange butterfly is perched on Red Clover. This is an Atlantis Fritillary, photographed in late June in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. The habitat of the Atlantis Fritillary includes forest openings, upland pastures, bogs, areas near woodland streams, and meadows. Atlantis Fritillaries are fairly common in the Adirondack region and usually fly from about mid-June to early September.

A medium-sized dark brown and orange butterfly is perched on some low vegetation. This is a Milbert's Tortoiseshell, a member of the Brushfoot (Nymphalidae) family. The upper side of the Milbert's Tortoiseshell is bright orange and deep chocolate brown. From below (the ventral surface), the wings are dark purplish brown, with a wide tan marginal band. The range of Milbert's Tortoiseshells extend from southern Alaska east to Newfoundland and West Virginia and south to California, Nevada, and New Mexico. Their range includes all of the western US and the northeastern US, as well as the Canadian provinces south of the tundra. Milbert's Tortoiseshells fly in the Adirondack region intermittently throughout the summer, from June through late September and very early October.

The Canadian Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio canadensis) is a medium to large butterfly with distinctive yellow and black coloring that may be seen in the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York in late spring and early summer. It is a member of the family Papilionidae (Swallowtails), named for the tail-like projections on their hind wings, resembling the tails of swallows.

A caterpillar with yellow, black, and white stripes is feeding on milkweed. This is the larva of the Monarch butterfly. Monarchs (Danaus plexippus) are large orange and black butterflies that may be seen in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York throughout the summer months. The Monarch is a member of the Brushfoot family. It is probably the best-known butterfly in North America.

A yellow butterfly with wings edged in pink is nectaring on a white flower. This is a Pink-edged Sulpur. The Pink-edged Sulphur (Colias interior) is a medium-sized yellow butterfly that flies in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York in June and July. It is a member of the Pieridae family. The Pink-edged Sulphur is one of three members of the Colias genus found in the Adirondack Park. The others are the Clouded Sulphur and the Orange Sulphur. Butterflies in this genus are usually some shade of yellow, orange, or white. Seen from above, they have black borders, solid in males and with pale spots in females. All of our sulphurs usually perch with closed wings, which complicates identification.

The image shows a large orange and black butterfly nectaring on a white and yellow flower. This is a Monarch. It is probably the best known of all migratory butterflies, migrating from overwintering sites in the south to its northern home in the spring and back again in the fall. Most Monarchs seen during the summer in the Adirondack Mountains and in the rest of eastern and central North America are part of a migratory process that ends in Mexico. However, no single individual makes the round-trip journey. The migration process involves several Monarch generations.

A medium-sized butterfly with pinkish orange markings across the fore wing is perched on a pinkish-white flower. This is an American Lady butterfly. It is a migratory butterfly the flies in the Adirondack Mountains during June, July, and August. American Ladies feed almost exclusively on flower nectar, including that of the pearly everlasting, dogbane, aster, goldenrod, marigold, and common milkweed. I took this photograph in early July on Heaven Hill, near Lake Placid in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York.
