An attractive orange butterfly is perched on low vegetation by a roadside in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New Yor. This is a Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui) –a migratory, orange-and-brown butterfly found throughout the Adirondacks from late May through September, with peak numbers in July and August. Often called the thistle butterfly, it thrives in open areas, roadsides, and meadows, where it feeds on nectar and lays eggs.

A large black butterfly with orange markings is perched on a flower. The Black Swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes) is a relatively large butterfly named for the tail-like projections on its wings, which resemble the tails of swallows. A large brown bird is walking on the grass in a meadow in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. This is a Wild Turkey, a bird that doesn’t get enough appreciation. Wild Turkeys can fly, but they spend most of their time on the ground, so they are very wary. When you see a bunch of Wild Turkeys in a field, they are usually hustling away from you, so you don’t get to appreciate how handsome they really are, with bronze-green iridescent plumage.
