Now I wish I hadn’t skipped it so I could direct my feedback to the advertiser.

Turning Opportunistic AI Inference Capacity Into Better Ads Recommendations
At Meta, we’ve built a system that enhances ads recommendations by leveraging idle inference capacity in our fleet. Two elasticity levers in the system allow ads recommendation work to expand across opportunistic capacity, without compromising baseline performance. This post describes how we designed and now operate the system at Meta’s scale and how it drives significant advertiser value and capacity efficiency.

#EzraLevant claiming “I've done something I've never done before. I personally registered with the City of Toronto as a third-party advertiser.” Is a lie. As if a weasel distinction like “him personally” vs Rebel, makes a difference other than a slimy legal & grift maneuver. #TOpoli #VoteOliviaChow

This type of stuff makes me so mad when I think about how it's all done to please some corporation so that their product will be "advertiser friendly". As if we all decided that public space must be devoid of anything that wouldn't make it into a Disney movie or people will avoid it for some reason

Column: Amid climate change, isles depend on Indigenous stewardship
As Hawaii faces increasingly severe storms, rising costs of disaster recovery and the accelerating impacts of climate change, one of our greatest sources of resilience may be one of our oldest: indigenuity, the innovation and wisdom embodied in Indigenous knowledge and stewardship practices. Long before conservation became a profession, Native Hawaiians mastered sophisticated systems of stewardship that sustained abundant forests, fisheries and communities across these Islands for centuries. Over generations, the displacement of Indigenous stewardship, land conversion, landscape transformation and colonial practices weakened these relationships and contributed to the decline of many of Hawaii’s forests, wetlands, streams and reefs. Yet the knowledge itself never disappeared. And today, kanaka maoli and communities across the islands are showing us that aloha aina and indigenuity are not simply values from the past. They are living practices that can help restore the forests, wetlands, reefs and nearshore waters that nourish us physically, culturally and spiritually. These leaders, together with their ohana and allies, embrace the kuleana to malama aina with pride and humility. Organizations like The Nature Conservancy (TNC) are embracing these values through biocultural conservation. Together, we work toward shared goals, restoring lands and waters while nurturing the next generation of stewards. Across...

Hybrid artificial reef being installed to protect coastline
Experimental coastal erosion infrastructure began being installed near Kalaeloa Harbor on Tuesday — but it wasn’t a seawall, nor was it a sand dune or pile of rocks. It was the beginning of a new hybrid artificial reef. The reef, which will be made up of 60 engineered concrete reef structures, were specifically designed to absorb wave energy and attract coral and fish. It will be a “living breakwater” system that, if successful, could be replicated in other parts of the state vulnerable to coastal erosion. The project started around five years ago as a partnership between the University of Hawaii and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, known as DARPA, a division of the Department of Defense. It was first slated to be installed off Marine Corps Base Hawaii at Kaneohe Bay, but due to permitting issues was moved to the other side of the island off Kalaeloa Harbor. The Hawaii Department of Transportation will take over ownership of the project once the reef is installed, DARPA Biological Technologies Office Deputy Director Catherine Campbell told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. DARPA funded the $23 million project, and the first year of monitoring and maintaining the project, which is $900,000, will be funded...

From the publisher’s perspective, it’s usually possible to prevent this, but requires painstaking management of advertiser blocklists in the ad platform, adding each unwanted advertiser individually. Meanwhile, RedNote may actually be bidding more aggressively for precisely this kind of placement.

It wouldn't surprise me if X have a 'deshittify' per-user feature flag for influential people in SV. They drive a lot of the legitimate, advertiser valued traffic on the site so you want to keep them happy.

Everyone else gets the CSAM slop and racism algo because that's what Musk wants.

One thing that will confirm whether social media traffic is down is advertiser numbers. Which also should raise the question on whether advertisers have been paying for bot impressions.
