O avanço do clã Bolsonaro — corrupto, racista e genocida — é uma ameaça mortal para indígenas, afro-brasileiros e toda a Amazônia. O pulmão verde do mundo está em perigo:

how is this different though from like the afro-brazilian slaves who practiced street fighting to defend themselves but disguised it as dancing? they also would have faced similar repercussions for "defending themselves". capoeira was even outlawed but preserved in records

and like, it's not even a case of "oh, if we practiced martial arts, we'd get in trouble with the ruling class"

Capoeira existed for this exact reason

there are LOTS of martial arts involving sticks and unarmed combat across many cultures

why isn't it the case in jewish communities?

So with the Evangelicals wanting to remove Our Lady Aparecida as patron saint, they also want to remove people's rights to believe and pray to saints. And they want to remove images of saints as well, including statues. Which also attacks the rights of people in Afro Brazilian religions.
September 30, 2026 at 12:28 PM
Catholicism and Afro-Brazilian religions use lots of images, as in statues of saints, to represent either the saints if you are Catholic or the Orixás. There's a whole thing with using catholic saints to represent different orixás.

It's paramount to observe that the conservative/laid back dynamic in Brazilian Christianity is mostly flipped in relation to the US. The Theology of Liberation, a Socialist reading of Christ, is Brazilian. Also, deep religious syncretism with Afro-Indigenous beliefs is the rule, not the exception. +
If y'all non-Brazilians want to know after that @lastweektonight.com segment, we're getting in a *checks notes* Inter-Christian Holy War where the Roman Catholic Church is on the democratic, freedom-defending side against evangelicals/protestants.

I am not either joking nor being too hyperbolic.

I immediately fell in love with this Afro-Brazilian martial art, which combines elements of dance, acrobatics and music. Over the years, I photographed numerous capoeira dancers in São Paulo, Rio and Bahia, always trying to capture the poetic beauty of their movements.

…not to mention hostile to the country’s magnificent Afro-Brazilian and indigenous traditions, and really did call for the deprecation of the saint, even if Flávio didn’t personally.

Let’s be happy Bolsonaro’s tropical Trumpism seems to be hurting him
electorally:

Haha as far as I know it’s basically a 3-2 clave pattern (without the 2 lol), extremely common in Afro-Cuban and Brazilian music!
September 28, 2026 at 4:07 AM
…not even the Virgin Mary is safe now.

It’s religious demagoguery, but good. The Bolsonarista right is even more hostile to Brazil’s Afro-Brazilian and indigenous traditions than to Catholicism.

From what I got there's no translation because it's a proper noun, something related to afro-brazilian religions, which is far from my area of expertise. From quick googling it seems Ejigbo is a city in Africa and Elejigbo is a title, the king of Ejigbo. I'm not sure how reliable this is though.

"Brazilian Protestantism is large and diverse, but its political elites are not. They are part of a single project for power rooted in a permanent culture war against the "godless": the Left, universities, Afro-Brazilian religions, the LGBTQ community, and - yes - Catholics."
