#Agromining
The science of this is way beyond me, but sharing because I'd never even heard of agromining (extracting rare metals from plants) and I'm fascinated.

Now this is cool "Phytomining (agromining) is a technique that uses specially selected plants to extract valuable metals from soil. Instead of digging ore out of the ground, you “grow” (aggregate) the metal in plants. You then harvest, dry and incinerate the plants, and refine the ash" #biodindustry
I noticed that this company is mining nickel from soil using phytomining. In 1996, my master's research was on phytomining uranium from soils using sunflowers, but there wasn't much support for it back then.

Once again, I was too early and have missed out. Oh well, best of luck 🔌💡

In a field of Odontarrhena chalcidica in Albania with Professor Jean Louis Morel of Université de Lorraine who has been instrumental in developing phytoremediation over decades and who coined the term 'agromining' to denote the agronomic chain in using hyperaccumulator plants as ‘metal crops’.

A friend did a work with mycelium, I think, to digest plastics. There's a place in Glasgow that uses bacteria to digest petrochemicals in contaminated soils. I have heard of agromining before, a long time ago more as a 'what if', interesting to see how far it's come.

Interesting, don't run across too many stories on phytoremediation in "popular" press. Saw this because the news aggregator PV Magazine generated a story on this agrivoltaics research.

Fun fact, my master's degree was in biomining.

What is the optimal configuration for integrating hyperaccumulating plants with photovoltaic systems to enhance plant development and energy production?
Industrial brownfield soils are often contaminated with trace metals, and these areas can be remediated by agromining, using hyperaccumulating plants …

On April 13, International #PlantAppreciationDay, we celebrate plants as sources of oxygen and food. But they can do more: through #phytomining or #agromining, some plants extract metals or pollutants from soil. We explore this in the Foresight section on #ELEMENTS Digital.
