#Alderflies
I reckon alderflies (Sialis lutaria) would be great at playing Twister.

Alderflies (Megaloptera: Sialidae) inhabit much of the world, but are most common in the northern hemisphere. Since their predaceous larvae are aquatic, they're most often seen near lakes, ponds, and slow-moving rivers. Females lay eggs on vegetation over the water. Blissfield Michigan, 27 May 2011.

This is Chrysoperla, Common green lacewing. So striking that I photograph them whenever I see them. Lacewings are neuropteridans, close within holometabolans to snakeflies, alderflies and kin. They're predators of aphids; Chrysoperla is a cosmopolitan genus. #insects #naturalhistory

Alderflies’ wings remind me of leaded windows.
Now there’s a project … a leaded window comprised (mostly) of insect wing venation patterns!

It would be great to have an up-to-date book on Europe's lacewings etc. but this isn't it. A hefty price for a small book that covers a small % of its too-big scope. The plates are mainly set specimens, too small to be of use. Some useful detail but limited value with so much omitted. More in ALT.

Lark Sparrow, House Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, and I think that's everyone!

These are from the last three days.

I'm trying to learn to recognize the different kinds of sparrows. I'm also trying to learn to differentiate between Dobson Flies, Fish Flies, Ant Lions, and Alderflies.

Lots of alderflies on the wing at the moment. Most will be Sialis lutaria but there are two other species, at least one of which is in Norfolk (fuliginosa: so far only recorded at Wendling Beck). They require a close look at the tip of the abdomen to identify to species.

Northern Michigan. I was on a relatively clean lake with a trout stream in/output. Related to fishflies and dobsonflies. Sort of a love child between a caddisfly and stonefly. Posted by NightmaresKnownAFew
