An exuberant, joyful, intricate, vibrant painting of the Virgin Mary in a rare presentation as guardian of the forest & of animals! 💕

Great AltTxt story about the art but the artist's story is even cooler, imo.

Alfredo Arreguín (American, b. Mexico, 1935-2023)
Our Lady of Amazonia, 1993
Oil on canvas — a large work, 4 feet by 6 feet.
#AlphabetChallenge #WeekRforReligion #Art #PNW
A large, colorful, and detailed painting of a Madonna surrounded by animals from the tropics. The artist Arreguín was born in Morelia, Michoacán, Mexico, and was encouraged by his grandparents to begin painting at a young age. When he was nine, he enrolled in the Morelia School of Fine Art, eventually moving on to the prestigious Escuela Nacional Preparatoria at the University of Mexico, from which he graduated in 1956. That same year, he came to Seattle and obtained a permanent visa so that he could attend Edison Tech (now Seattle Central College) to study English, earn his US high school diploma, and enroll at the University of Washington to study architecture. When a condition of his visa made him eligible for the draft, Arreguín entered the U.S. Army and was stationed in Korea and Japan. Upon his discharge in 1960, he returned to architectural studies, eventually transitioning to interior design and, finally, the school of art at UW. After receiving his MFA in 1969, he settled permanently in Seattle, becoming a force among artists and an integral member of the local Chican community. Arreguín is celebrated for his astonishing signature style: exuberant, mosaic-inflected, all-over compositions comprised of motifs derived from the rainforests and indigenous cultures of Central and South America, the compositions of Japanese printmakers Hokusai and Hiroshige, and the nature and topography of the Pacific Northwest. Today, his paintings are in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Seattle Art Museum, and the National Portrait Gallery, among other institutions. One of Arreguín's many Madonna images, Our Lady of Amazonia presents the Virgin Mary (with Child) as a powerful guardian of the forest and its animals and not strictly as a religious figure.

A vertical colour photo of the iconic postmodern Williams Tower and the adjacent Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park fountain in Houston, Texas. Both landmarks were designed by the renowned architectural team of Philip Johnson and John Burgee. The 64-foot-tall semicircular water wall was intentionally engineered to match the scale of the soaring 64-story office tower standing right behind it. Visually, this is a low-angle, vertical photograph taken from inside Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park captures the juxtaposition between rushing water and corporate architecture. Filling the right half of the frame, the massive, curved convex wall of the concrete fountain rises dramatically. White water cascades down the textured grey surface in heavy, parallel sheets, creating a blurred effect of continuous motion. Bold, vertical bands of warm tan limestone accent the structure, creating sharp lines that lead the eye upward. Looming in the background on the left is the sleek Williams Tower, its dark blue reflective glass curtain wall stretching into a bright blue sky. Puffy white clouds are clearly mirrored in the skyscraper's glossy windows, accentuating its towering 901-foot height. In the upper left corner, a few dark silhouette leaves from a nearby tree frame the top of the shot, emphasizing the high-contrast perspective of the urban landscape

The #BuddhistTemple up the street from my vet is such a bright & striking scene. The Pure Land Trinity below is very important in Buddhism. (See AltTxt.)

#AlphabetChallenge #WeekRforReligion
#Architecture #UrbanGaze #ECK #Photography #Photographers #StreetPhotography
This photo centers primarily on The Pure Land Trinity (of statues) in Buddhism, located in a simple suburban temple complex in Houston. Google explains the meaning better than I could: "In East Asian and Mahayana Buddhist traditions, an arrangement of three standing figures like this typically represents the Amitabha Buddha in the center, flanked by his two main attendants: the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara (Guanyin) and the Bodhisattva Mahasthamaprata. • Core Practice: These three figures are central to Pure Land Buddhism, where Amitabha is the primary focus of devotion for rebirth into the Western Pure Land." Visually, this is vivid, high-contrast digital photograph of an outdoor Buddhist shrine under a brilliant blue sky filled w/ soft, bright white clouds. In the foreground, a heavily textured crimson mesh metal bridge with structural handrails extends centrally into the frame, leading the eye over a lush, sun-dappled field of soft green grass and neatly manicured shrubs. The bridge culminates at an open-air pavilion supported by sleek, bright red pillars and crowned with a pale beige modern roof. Sheltered beneath the structure are three tall, pristine white stone statues of standing deities, reflecting intense daylight against the dark, organic shadows cast by the dense canopy of trees rising directly behind the shrine. The intense color contrast between the deep cerulean sky, the electric red architecture, and the crisp white statues creates a highly saturated, visually striking composition."

I'm fascinated by this building. Is it garish? Yet also cool despite being garish? 🤔 I see Art Deco touches in the Postmodernism, but Google disagrees. (See AltTxt)

#BlueSkyMonday #Architecture #UrbanGaze #Photographers #StreetPhotography #Skyscrapers #ECK #Photography
Photo of The Royalton at River Oaks, a luxury high-rise condominium in Houston whose appearance fascinates me. Officially, it's described as "Postmodern with elements of 20th-century modern design. Built in 2003, its design combines a classic stone-toned grid structure with contemporary blue curtain-wall glass windows and an illuminated crown." To me, though, the top & the crown look Art Deco-ish in its curves, albeit with an almost Mayan-like quality to the crown. Visually, this photo captures a towering high-rise residential building piercing a vibrant, dynamically clouded blue sky, shot from a low-angle perspective across a serene body of water. The photograph is defined by a striking color contrast between the architectural elements and the natural landscape, as the building's central vertical column of glossy, bright blue glass panels mirrors the sky and sharply stands out against its surrounding warm, beige concrete facade. This sleek, smooth geometric structure heavily contrasts with the organic textures below, where a lush, dense grove of deep green and slightly sun-gilded trees lines a rustic stone retaining wall. In the foreground, the murky green water of a calm pond gathers soft patches of aquatic flora, completing a composition rich in both reflective architectural surfaces and varied natural foliage.

My fav. interior in the city: The #KinderMuseum, Steven Holl's multidimensional manipulation of light as if it were a solid raw material. (See AltTxt.)

#Architecture #ModernArt #ECK #Photography #MFAH #ClassicMono #BWphotography #LightAndShadow #BnW #Photographers
The photograph captures the interior atrium of the Nancy and Rich Kinder Building, located at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH). Opened to the public on November 21, 2020, this 164,000-square-foot masterpiece was designed by Steven Holl Architects as part of a major campus expansion. A defining feature of its architecture is the "luminous canopy" roof, which incorporates concave, billowed curves inspired by the dramatic cloud formations of the big Texas sky. These unique cloudlike geometries push down on the roofline, creating a dynamic system of clerestory windows that organic and flowing lines inside the building, subverting the mechanical repetition of standard gallery grids. Steven Holl notoriously treats light not as an afterthought, but as a primary, solid architectural raw material, shaping the structural boundaries of the museum to manipulate its volume. I'll let Google explain further: "Holl has often referred to his practice as "luminist architecture," asserting that space is nothing without the activation of light. For the Kinder Building, he specifically noted his desire to design an interior with a light "as inspiring as Lou Kahn's Kimbell Art Museum, but more organic, more dynamic—like the clouds". By engineering the curved undersides of the ceiling to act as giant light reflectors, Holl allowed natural illumination to slide across the galleries like a tactile element, treating light as if it were a physical substance sculpted to frame the artwork.

Houston's Christ Church Cathedral has won awards for its Mixed-Use Project downtown (cropped) that mixes urban administration, public access, & community outreach. (Details in AltTxt.)

#AOFoto #UrbanGaze #ECK #Photography #Photographers #StreetPhotography #Architecture
The Christ Church Cathedral Mixed-Use Project, located in downtown Houston, Texas, is an award-winning campus expansion designed by architect Larry Speck of Page. Encompassing an entire city block, the project seamlessly integrates administrative offices for the Bishop and Diocese, a 350-car parking garage, and facilities for expanding community outreach programs. The design balances urban utility with green spaces, featuring extensive wooden sun-shading trellises, local brickwork, and a quarter-block park that creates a welcoming public transition between the historic 1893 Gothic Revival sanctuary and the surrounding cityscape. The extensive wood and steel sun-shading trellises are engineered to provide maximum daylighting while naturally regulating solar heat. This low-angle vertical shot captures a series of dark structural steel columns rising from low brick retaining walls to support an overhead wooden slat pergola. Strong geometric lines dominate the composition; the parallel vertical lines of the metal framing contrast sharply with the repetitive, horizontal slats of the timber canopy that filter incoming daylight. A dramatic color juxtaposition anchors the image, contrasting the warm, earthly red tones of the sunlit brick bases with the cool, dark charcoal of the steel and the vibrant green foliage peeking through from the background park.

Three #ModernArt sculptures by celebrated modernist Harry Bertoia who redefined spatial exploration. He used negative space as solid space & geometry; & worked w/ air, motion, 3D design, & #architecture. (More in AltTxt.)

#ECK #UrbanGaze #Photography #Photographers
All three artworks on display here are created by the celebrated modernist sculptor Harry Bertoia & exhibited at Kinder modern art museum, part of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. I'll let Google & Art Facts explain the art significance: "these pieces showcase Bertoia's masterful ability to transform industrial metals into organic, biomorphic forms. On the far left stands his soaring Untitled (Multiplane Construction) (c. 1953), assembled from rectangular plates of gilded copper and brass. In the center is a sweeping, dynamic wire design that captures kinetic energy, typical of his Untitled (Willow) series. To the far right on the pedestal sits one of his meticulously welded, branching Untitled (Bush Form) sculptures, highlighting the intricate interplay between geometric abstraction and nature." They "redefine spatial exploration by shifting the focus from solid, static mass to open, permeable forms that interact directly with light and architectural surroundings. Through delicate wire-mesh screens and towering metal rod configurations, the works transcend traditional boundaries to merge physical form with the invisible elements of motion, reflection, and air. Ultimately, this mastery of materials expands three-dimensional art into a multisensory experience, inviting viewers to explore how metal can capture nature's organic rhythms while filling the gallery space with both visual and sonic resonance."

Alexander Calder’s famous "International Mobile" looks extra cool imo under the "billowing cloud" layers of the #minimalist Kinder Museum. (More in AltTxt.)

#Architecture #UrbanGaze #ECK #Photography #Photographers #ClassicMono #BWphotography #ModernArt #LightAndShadow
A BnW vertical photo of hanging art in the Kinder Museum, part of the MFAH. The building is stunning bc of its light contrasts and layers. I'll let Google explain more: "architect, Steven Holl, famously refers to light as his favorite material, believing that 'space is oblivion without light.' For the Kinder Building, he used concave curves inspired by cloud circles to allow natural light to 'slip in with precise measure and quality' to organically shape the gallery experiences." The photo here splits focus between the building & a piece of hanging art in the center of the shot called "International Mobile" (1949). It is a monumental kinetic sculpture created by the pioneering American artist Alexander Calder that "consists of an intricate, delicately balanced network of thin steel wires and rods supporting numerous organically shaped sheet aluminum paddles. As a defining masterpiece of Kinetic Art—a style Calder famously pioneered—the sculpture shifts the traditional definition of sculpture away from heavy, solid masses toward dynamic, airy compositions that rely entirely on natural air currents to move and continually redefine the surrounding architectural space." Visually, this is a high-contrast, BnW photo of the art sculpture & the building atrium that relies heavily on geometric abstraction, featuring the mobile's shapes juxtaposed against the dramatic, fluid curves of the walls. Intense light contrasts dominate the frame: bright illumination pours from an overhead skylight or hidden source, causing the white elements of the mobile to glow brilliantly and cast soft, sweeping shadows against the architecture, while the upper-most dark paddles silhouetted against the light provide a stark structural counterpoint. The dynamic interplay of intersecting diagonal wires, curved surfaces, and shifting tones creates a deep sense of volumetric space and elegant, suspended balance.
